  1. You might want to ensure you get sporting rights included as many farmers who let land reserve the rights for themselves, but in your favour more power to you , if you can get a steady flow of pigeons why not, I have a 7 acre field which has a good flight line over it, I often set up a few decoys and the hide and get up to 100 birds over in a session, not many come in to the decoys but if I get in a dozen shots in a session im happy, I might even hit a couple so I can have a nice pigeon pie for tea. anyway it gets me out of the house which pleases the wife
  2. Bah humbug, told the wife we are out for christmas, booked in to the local pub £25 for 4 courses on christmas day, no cooking, no washing up, no tryin to keep everyone happy, couple of beers after dinner then home for telly and an early night, oh and the bonus, no chewin on cold turkey for a week afterwards, couldnt be better. roll on 2013.
  3. the speed controllers are normally matched to the motors, you need to check the max current draw advised for the controller and check the current draw when the motor is running at you ideal speed, motors draw more amps at lower speeds or higher loads, the speed controller needs to be rated at least 25% higher than the max motor current required or the control chip will overheat, its a pity you resoldered the controller as that will void any warranty you had, if the chip is damaged there is little you can do with it,, I use speed controllers for model aircraft motors which are radio controlled and come in a large range of sizes, trying to match motors to controllers is a real headache but there is a lot of info on line , try a google on the controller you have there may be some info out there , best of luck, merry christmas all,
  4. hi leeds, yes I keep a 20 ft cabin boat on martham dyke just for me and the wife to get out on hickling and horsey, we fish most weeks through the summer but dont bother winter times when its cold, we sometimes just bash the bits in the dyke and I stick out a pike line to make it interesting, I think ive owned one boat or another continuously since I was about 21, just love being out on the water and shooting of course. merry christmas Alan,
  5. I took my cat5 powerboat licence in a quicksilver 15 foot with a small cuddy cabin, we were out in 3 meter seas for most of the weeks course and she was brill, seakeeping and stability were great, 50hp outbourd was all it needed and easy on and off the trailer, some of the modern hull designs are so much better now, so dont discount them without trying.
  6. I was the same as you , air rifle shooting on a small permission, applied for the SGC in october, declared my two minor indiscressions, one motoring and one criminal both very recent, they made no difference at all, on the home visit he was more concerned with my knowledge of gun safety and security, you should have no problem, best of luck,
  7. I taught my two to fish on small farmers ponds that were full of small fish with the odd bonus carp or tench, they never failed to catch and watching their faces as they reeled in the bigger ones was great, sadly neither of them went on to fish seriously but they did enjoy it as youngsters, I have fished club and open matches for many years and only gave up recently due to health problems, now I just fish from a small boat on the Norfolk broads but whenever they come to visit they always want to get the boat out and have a go, problem is they borrow all my gear so I have to sit back and watch, kids eh, anyway its best to wait till the water warms up a bit end of May into June is best, more chance of a few fish, light lines, small hooks, single maggot you cant fail. best of luck Alan
  8. Absolutely brilliant video, one of the best pike videos I've seen, many thanks for the link, I fish the Norfolk broads from my small boat, mostly Hickling broad and Horsey mere and there are plenty of big pike if you can find them, my best is 25 lbs but almost all on fish baits, I've tried lure fishing many times but the very cloudy water makes it hard for the pike to find the lures, so a dead bait on the bottom works best, but next time I'm on some clear water I will get the lure box out and give it a go. For anyone interested there are a lot of good pike collecting in Martham dyke and around the Stalham boatyards, where all the baitfish tend to congregate for the winter, the pike hold in these areas until February when they move back to the open waters to breed. tight lines Alan
  9. NAAH!!! if they cant see you, they cant judge your character, and its too easy to hit the delete button, face to face is always best, good manners, pleasant friendly approach, and dont waste their time, they are always busy, keep it short and to the point, my best results have been through a mutual friend, name drop smile and hope. good luck.
  10. Anyone interested there is a new sports supply shop open in martham, norfolk, Boadland country sports have a good selection of shooting needs , decoys clothing, hides etc, plus various shotgun cartridges, no guns at present but who knows if they get good support, location is , the granery, staithe road Martham. 01493 748924, I live nearby but only have 3 such shops within a 15 mile radius so im pleased to have another supplier for my needs.
  11. Hi Thar, nice idea , but in reality many shooters guard their permission's, worried others will try to 'poach' once they know where the land is, or simply do not wish to risk inviting another shooter who may turn out to be dangerous or irresponsible. Location is the other problem, here in Norfolk there are not so many shooters around , many farms prefer a few driven 'game' days, rather than having crop protection on a regular basis, less than a mile from here there are several rape fields almost bare from pigeon damage, yet the farmers will not allow shooting in case you disturb a few pheasants, I only have a very small field where I can shoot and only see a few pigeons and rabbits to go at, so I keep busy by shooting clays as often as I can. If I had larger areas to shoot over I would like some company and also to encourage new people to get started, I spend several hours a week visiting farmers and keepers to try to win respect and eventually permission, but its a long hard road, if you have a good area to shoot why not just invite local shooters out for the day and see what develops, best of luck .
  12. I was decoying on a really windy day with the wind behind me the pigeons were coming in really low and slow, I decided to see how close they would come so I stood outside the hide in full camo and face veil, gun raised ready, a big fat one came in closer and closer, by the time I pulled the trigger it was only about 10 feet away, one wing and its tail went one way the head and other wing the other, I couldn't have cut it cleaner with a knife, don't get me wrong, who wants to mess them up that much, I'd rather have something for the pot but if you keep still and well hidden they will always come in close enough.
  13. Just shoot the little *******, it dosn't matter when or how, every one down saves the farmer a sack of valuable crop, and makes a nice little pie in the process, GET AT EM !!!
  14. Dont get me wrong, I think PW is a great forum and there are some really interesting and friendly blokes on here, but !!!!
  15. Try looking on youtube, just put in pigeon decoying, there are loads of first class videos ,
  16. I use a few lofters to draw them in, but you only have a short time until the light goes so make sure you have clear line of sight through the trees and no low branches to catch your barrels as you swing, it is best to find the right spot then go back to it in daylight and check how much height you have under the branches, just clip off any in the way, I like to wait for them to settle then snipe-em with my air rifle, you can even hit them in poor light as they sillouette against the sky,
  17. Following the comments put foward on here I accept all comments and withdraw my complaint, perhaps I will sell it elsewhere. merry christmas to all on PW

    Jays

I used to run a shoot in nottinghamshire in the 70's and we were overrun with jays and magpies, needless to say we hit them hard but they kept coming back, the lure of all those defencless songbird , pheasant and partridge nests was too much for them to resist, we had hedgrows full of bullfinches, chaffinches, linnets, song thrushes and many many more, but where are they now, yes removing hedges and spraying has had its affects on numbers but so have these killers, just because it has pretty feathers dosn't make it a benefit to the countryside, as for cats, try tying a bell round their necks, it works on my cats, a little bit of sense goes a long way.
  19. As evo says, unsolder the wires to the speaker inside the amp, buy a ferrite ring from your local radio repair shop, wind the wires 3 times through the ring then resolder back onto the speaker, this will filter out unwanted frequencies but not affect the guiter amplification, easy enough, nothing ventured nothing gained, I used to play through a marshal 40, on stage no problem, but unplug the guitar and I used to get radio taxi messages, handy for people wanting to leave my concerts early which tended to be most of the audience, good luck, alan
  20. Thanks jason, good of you to say, and your son makes a great scorer, nice to see the younger ones getting involved , looking foward to another bash at the clays, see if I can improve on 22, regards Alan.
  21. Many thanks for the info, I have already contacted hitclays as I wanted to go on the norfolk flush but sadly not well enough to go, but have PM'd countryside Lass just in case, regards Alan.
  22. joined the two friends clay club at blofield heath today, nice bunch of fellas, gave me some good advice ( thanks to steve ), I didn't disgrace myself and actually hit 22 out of 40, which I thought was a fair performance for a first attempt in 30 years. cant wait till next week and get at them again, on the way back I spotted several hundred pigeons on two rape fields, looks like they are starting to build up the numbers so might get some sport before long.thanks to all for the info etc, and of course to PW for the contacts. alan
  23. Blimey I would be laughing all the way to the bank with £20, I could buy the christmas turkey and still have some change, your generosity seems to have no boundery, merry christmas to you.
