  1. That's wot I thought reading between the lines scotslad just thought I'd ask tho as like u if it is a true head keepers job can see trouble brewing!
  2. How many birds, rearing/poults how many days bag size is it a head keepers job or is it single handed never looks good if the beat/under keeper has more of an idea than the head keeper. if u think you can cope with the job and this is wot u really want to do then grab it with both hands just remember that there aren't many jobs about at the moment and a lot of good keepers are without jobs
  3. For a women friendly shoot chess grove in the forest of Dean is a lovely relaxed shoot no where near coley's size but you want find a more friendly ground. Griffin-Lloyd is a great shoot in Knighton depending where is south Wales you are coming from, long ridge is a good ground to just of the m50
  4. Its a little bit early at the moment I will try and get you one I'm in Cheltenham. Tips I would give would be have the perch length way so under the cover and under the open bit, get a rabbit drinker for the call birds water feed it dry dog food, a small padlock on the call birds door will stop anyone just opening the door to release the call bird or u leaving it open. I think basc do a good print out sign to put onto the trap explaining this is a legal method of pest control. Keep your trap moving, if it's been placed where you have seen a pair and it hasn't caught even moving it by a couple of meters can be all it needs. If you start really early remember we can still get very cold nights so keep an eye on weather and if it looks to be cold bring the trap inside to protect the call bird. Also try and keep a spare call bird once you've caught your first/second. Good luck And if you catch first can I have a call bird please?
  5. If you could supply a name contact number that would be helpful via pm if you would rather as I'm interested in this also Cheers Lewis
  6. My lad has been out beating/picking up around 20 times so far this season which isn't bad considering he is only 15 weeks old!!!
  7. You will be lucky to find ex layers in good nick this year everyone is in the same boat, if I was you I would be lucky that you have got your birds I have heard off some real disaster stories so far this year and we ain't home and dry yet!
  8. Yep just use small staples and hog ring it to your straining wire
  9. I would use the plastic stuff every time easier to use makes a neat job, just make sure you use rabbit mesh for the bottom of the pen. I renewed all 5 of my pens with the plastic netting and never had a problem. Would highly recommend the stuff.
  10. Can ring my mate tomorrow and find out about insurance but they have two on the shoot both are road registered. They seem to be a good bit of kit time will tell as the got them after the start of the shooting season so will see how the cope with the rearin and release season, they do have a smaller load bay than the mule/Kubota tho
  11. Would stay well clear of mules unless you can replace them every three years we had nothing but problems with them we went to Kubota v.good but v.slow my mates have just changed to polaris rangers very good and they can be road reg. Heard some good things about both JCBs and the gators. Just get as many as you can on demo and see which one suits you best.
  12. Sorry mike my iPad can't load that will have to wait till I get my laptop back
  13. Yeah typed the normal into it couldn't see it wondering if anyone could remember the name of the program?
  14. I'm sure that I saw a programme on BBC years ago about an old bloke who lived on the banks of the Mississippi and was a Trapper catching snapping turtles, beavers ect can anyone remember/seen it? Or did I dream it
  15. I'd say 6.5x55 but that's only as I shoot one and like it as others have said 308 is a very good round you won't go far wrong with it and as has been said if you are shooting red and fallow mainly would forget about the .243 and get something bigger.
  16. Ive got bfg all terrains on mine it will go anywhere, it light so doesn't bog down. I was a full time keeper tree work has just been a stop gap hopefully by the end of the week will have sorted another job out. I've got my pinin more places than I could get the estate LR90 with mud terrains. I would say a cheap pickup would be better for your lad if he can afford it will be more use. We can get our 6 dogs in at a push just need a double cab as we want to have just the one truck so need more seats as the pinin is just a two seater
  17. I've got a pinin 4work and am a tree surgeon greate little truck will go anywhere. Nice and comfy ride, ok on fuel not very good if you want to tow anything, I have towed a 1.5 ton chipper with it but u know your towing. Fingers crossed I'm going back to keeping and am prob going to sell mine to get a pickup (need more seats) my mrs wants to keep it, she uses it when she goes picking up she did 55 days and she didn't even get it stuck
  18. The clay shoot was in Gloucestershire it was a semi auto involved 3 people were injured 2 were minor 1 serious it was an accident the shoot has been cleared of any wrong doing not sure as to what has happened to the shooter
  19. I thought that any one passing their test after 1997 could only tow upto 750kg any heavier and you need your towing licence
  20. I go over when I can I'm good friends with his sons, and me and my mrs pickup for him. It's a nice ground with a brilliant family friendly atmosphere tell him Lewis was singing his praises when you see him next. Next time you go try and shoot the high tower from some of the first stands. Longridge is also not that far from you and shows some very good targets.
  21. I go to chess grove Steve taught me too shoot top bloke nice little clay ground can make it as easy or as hard as you want to.
  22. Like everyone else has said just get another 1/4 and just have 1/4 1/4 . Never forget I was helping on my mates farm where he has a clay shoot we came back to the farm to refill some clay traps and there was a group of 4 shooters all stood at the high tower stand with my mates dad with them telling him that to hit that clay constantly you would need 32g of no6 with at least 1/2 mates dad called me over and said shoot that so I did hit hit, do it again hit hit again hit hit was using his learner gun skeet skeet with 24g 7's it's where you put it that counts I always use improved and 1/4 only ever change choke for when I shoot game.
  23. Sorry to here about your dog mate was it your black cocker. Who is the keeper up there is it that old chap didn't really like the way he ended it when I shot with you was already making excuses before he even knew the final bag!
  24. i have the pinin 4work brilliant off road took mine more places than i could get the estate LD 90. we get our 6 dogs in the back of it ok. nice to drive could do with a little more poke behind, plus if you do need to tow with it, it will do it but you dont want to do too much with it, ive towed a 1.5ton chipper and it was ok untill we got too any steep hills.
