  1. The engraving on these is so much nicer then the newer patterns. Ita quite nice to study on a quiet drive!
  2. You've described 90% of gundogs there, that's quite achievable. It will require effort consistently through training and the off season but 10 mins of good training a day is worth much more than 2 hours at the weekend. Most dogs on my shoots are pets 90% of the year linving inside and working once a week in winter.
  3. I learnt from various books and observations and as mentioned a lot is common sense once you think about it. I also visited a trainer who I must say was excellent, taught me how to teach the dog rather than train the dog for me. Best beer tokens I've ever spent.
  4. Glad I'm not just a little bit jealous. Must work harder...Or strike oil somewhere

    Cartridge bag

Hi mate, no its got no initials embossed I'd upload another pic but difficulty compressing it for some reason
  8. For sale, Top quality Brown sturdy leather cartridge / loaders bag, probably holds around 150 shells. This bag is in excellent condition, still has that new leather smell. It has been used once on a day I loaded for a friend This is a London cartridge bag, thick shoulder straps and brass fittings. It has 15 fast load loops holding 30 shells for quick loading. A perfect treat for Christmas, or just because you want it! £65 + P&P
  9. Spot on. They don't much like you getting out after them but it's very effective if your consistent with it
  10. That's towards dealer money, if he'd take 1500 it's worth it, if not you can get a very good 686/687 for 1200.same gun different colour action basically. Dealer would I reckon offer 1k for it. 28" less popular these days (makes little difference) and fixed choke always less desirable.
  11. Article about this in last month's sporting gun, as you say one of the common reasons was sugar levels dropping off causing a collapse. Could also cause fits apparently. Sounds like you done the right thing, hope he's okay next time out
  12. Unless your not of average build or arm and neck length it may be poor mount not fit. And as most guns are relatively similiar in average stock dimensions you may not benefit from the change. Assuming your gun is left handed and you shoot off the left shoulder? It sounds like the comb is too tight to your face. Bare in mind the comb height near your thumb is higher than further back. There should be about 2 fingers width between your nose and tip of the comb. How does yours measure?
  13. Try soaking it in hot water? Change of texture might do the trick. What's his teeth like? Might be a problem there, got a tooth ache last thing you'd want is hard kibble. Some dogs do go off their food for no reason, I'd look at it with three options: 1 change the food 2 add water or gravy 3 wait it out, he'll eat if hungry enough. Some people advocate a starve day here and there.
  14. I would say it's equally as important he trains you as the dog, it irons out problems much easier if you know what you are doing wrong to confuse the dog, it's not always them that does wrong. Something to think about.
  15. I Thought (being the key word here) that liver and white in cockers wasn't possible with out close springer blood. But I have since been told that's wrong so it's quite possible it's just a liver and white cocker. KC certificates aren't worth the paper they are written on, simply no way to prove the sire, apparently in long dogs it's been known for the sire to be fathering pups long after his death! Are the dam and sire both dogs he bred?
  16. Split litters are also not unheard of. Seen a jack Russel litter contain a lurcher cross. Likewise some cocker litters where one bares an uncanny resemblance to the shady looking springer dog in the garden whilst the others are most certainly cockers
  17. I'd say if you want a cocker go for one. BUT be aware you'll need to work much harder in training and be constantly working on it for it to be a peg dog. If you go the cocker route I'd say go part trained, at least you can get a feel for the dogs steadiness with a demo and then have something to build on. The point being you get a better idea of temperament with the older dog than you can with a pup. Essentially your asking a lot more of a cocker to do what you want then a lab, speak with a couple of pro trainers they may have suitable dogs ready. If your going to go it totally alone your safest bet is a lab. There bred for it at the end of the day
  18. For Sale Musto clay shooting Jacket in olive green size S although not too bad for a medium. Bought as a present last xmas but never worn. Lightweight Waterproof and breathable, mesh lined 2 way zip and large double below pockets. Internal security pocket. Quality item as you'd expect from Musto guaranteed to add hits to your scores! £55 posted. . Cheers
  19. I'd be tempted to try if only to see if it breaks the cycle. Who knows might transform the dog completely.
  20. In no way suggesting it's a quick fix nor that the other methods would not work. But obviously there is a safety issue in being able to stop and recall a dog well, one we all recognise, but have you thought of trying an electric collar? Not a fan myself but can see the benefit when used sensibly and responsibly.
  21. Don't understand what bit of THIS quote is rubbish E.W? I think the point is to Put into context for a puppy this means keep it fun and gentle but keep a thought in your head as to what your effectively allowing the dog to learn or do that may hamper future training. Yes mistakes will be made however careful you are, as they will in the future! If you don't have things to work on in training you either are not training. Joshcup11, I think the key here is a bit of common sense.... Don't let the dog get away with murder but don't allow it to go too far wrong by asking too much too soon. Set yourself and the dog up to succeed from an early age, don't train yet but have one eye on the future. The foundations of much of your partnership and understanding can begin now.
  22. There's no reasons you can't lay the foundations for future training whilst they are a pup. As you are doing so with the recall at dinner time. No gunfire yet; there's a membrane within the ear that is not formed just yet and you could damage hearing. With regards to a list, I assume as a lab you want for retrieving. So the main commands need to be for handling at a distance to blind retrieves and to keep the dog in an area where the bird dropped. I'd recommend a whistle you can be more subtle to others and game around you than vocally. Plus at 200 yards I doubt your hi lost command will be as audible to the dog as your pips on a whistle.
