  1. Sorry was looking at steel Rio Ammo i should have made that clear . AMENDED!
  2. Any idea who stocks RIO STEEL ammo, i have rang every gunshop i know about in the top half of the uk and no body sells any.
  3. Although shooting them is the best method by far its time consuming and not always practical. I like amongst other methods to leave poison down the whole time around the birds, and the best way i have found is bait stations. just make them up from drain pipe and fill them up with a bung end as a top, they can be tie warped to a post or shed side or wall and as rats move about tight to things they walk straight in to them. they are safe cheap and effective and they or killing 24/7. Make some feeders up like this for rats . But shooting is best if you got the time. I leave poison down the whole time around the birds.
  4. And all replied too.
  5. Looking for shotgun reloading presses complete or just parts. What have you got!?

  7. You have been away from the sport a long time, so any set preferences you developed back then are probably well diluted by now, So it is a new start and given the perimeters you have outlined i would be reluctant to advise buying a gun of any kind over about 500 pounds. This is my self imposed limit, based on what i feel most people could buy a gun and afford to side line it to the back up gun status if they ultimately decided to move on in due course, and not forgetting this is based again on my financial take on the matter because i have no idea of yours. Now the gun. I think a 12 bore is your best option the versatility of a multi choke although not essential in any, is in my opinion a feature your gun should have given the tasks you outlined in your posts above. Pigeons and ultimately geese ? you need a 3 inch chambered gun minimum again its not essential but it is practical. A 3.5 inch gun would be useful too however a longer action length and generally speaking a little more weight in the guns in that clambering although desirable in a pure wildfowling gun, are perhaps not ideal in a pigeon gun, and it is for this reason i am choosing to dismiss the 3.5 inch from the equation. What type of gun you chose is dictated by what you are doing where you are doing it and personal preference, now as you have just the one gun to go at you have to consider the facts and be prepared for some compromising some where. So when you look at the requirement i feel are relative so far 500 pounds 12 bore multi choke and a 3 inch chamber you are narrowing down the options fast, SXS s in 3 inch although some are multi choke most are not and even second hand 500 pounds wont i feel get you a multi choked magnum SxS. Over and under shotguns in 3 inch multi choke are far more common than Sxs s in that configuration and you will have guns to chose from but at 500 pounds a new gun could be a struggle to find i think. Next up Pumps and semi autos, Plenty of these to chose from for the 500 pounds, but the fact you are perhaps not well versed in operating a pump action could be a problem, and for this reason i personally would dismiss the pump if i were you. Semi autos are practical for many reasons most are gas operated and this aspect of their design tends to reduce felt recoil even inertia guns reduce the felt recoil to some extent but it has to be said not as significantly as long recoil or gas systems tend to. Semi autos operate inline when loading unloading this aspect makes them useful and above all quite inherently safe in the confines of a hide where a break open style gun as the potential to hang up in foliage netting or god forbid mud. However as a counter to this tend to be less dependable if they do actually take on any dirt or debris in the field. Taking all the above points in to account i would buy a semi auto 12bore multi choke 3 inch magnum . i would buy new for the simple reason you could spend much of your 500 pounds on fuel running up and down the country looking at used shotguns, when you buy new you are buying a known quantity with a guarantee and if you buy a popular brand with a good spares/repairs back up sold by a well established company, whom most gun dealers in the uk have some regular interaction, you will have no problem ordering a gun or getting it repaired if anything should go wrong. The obvious and only practical choice in my opinion is the Hatsan Escort 3 inch magnum.
  8. My main reason for asking was i planed on buying 500 to use as and when i needed them if i had insufficient reloads or components, but fate had it i could only buy 1 case when i went by the shop so i duly bought it and i am thinking this next season of trying these and some rio steel rather than reload it takes the chore out of duck ammo loading . Who sells the blue steel by rio i am up and down the country all the time with work so locations i can probably get to with a little planning.
  9. I tend to reload most of my cartridges for wildfowling, but the last week of the season i was out of duck loads. So i got a box of superstells to et me through. . The last supersteels i had a few yearss ago now, i was surprised that these cartridges felt a little more lively than the last lot i had and velocities for these back then were about 1250FPS from memory, i did end up shooting off all the box in the end and as i have none of the older ones for a true comparison i thought i would ask on here, those of you who have chronographed these cartridges are the newer supersteels any different performance wise than they were lets say three years ago, or are they the same. BB.
  10. I have two 8 bore doubles at the moment a Armitalia Luchini 8 bore double hammer gun, and a Ralph grant 8 bore basically a bored out ten, the grant could be for sale if anyone fancies it . I don't use the 8s much at all these days tend to use the auto ten most of the time.
  11. I use several aftermarket chokes in various guns for steel shot and yes i use tighter than 3/4 choke, the patterns are significantly improved with the aftermarket chokes generally. In my ten gold for example i have three aftermarket chokes a briley IM and two terror chokes i got four years ago a .720 and a .705 which when you look at my golds bore of .777 of an inch that's some choke constriction. I have a SBE 2 and it did struggle to pattern any shot size bigger than 2s but i fitted a .675 terror and this choke transformed the guns capabilities with BB size shot . Now not wanting to dilute anything i have said but just to remind you, these are my findings with my guns and my loads, the only sure way of knowing what a gun choke mix will work like is to pattern your gun load and choke, but in my opinion if i were to take one gamble on buying an aftermarket choke tube for a 12bore shooting steel at typical uk foreshore ranges i would buy a terror .675 and it its a ten get a .720 terror i do not think you will get better.
  12. I have been using these for a couple of seasons for decoying, i got a couple of cases from a shop that has now closed down. Anybody know a shop that sells Rio Blue steel. Anywhere northern./ eastern England .
  13. I have a camo 425 Browning waterfowl i have been using most of this season and its my go to gun at the moment , i fitted it with a few different chokes and ended up with a briley extended mod in the lower barrel and briley extended imp mod in the top. I do normaly use autos though it has to be said.
  14. The Rizzini Lincolns are ok on reliability, about the only thing i had go wrong was it broke the cocking spur off the rear of the forend iron, but the 12bore Lincoln no 2 cocking spur is a direct replacement and only minor gunsmithing to instal/ file to correct length to cock and not over reach the mechanisum is required.. I am perhaps offering advice you may no want here, but keep or sell the basque depenting how much you need the money and save up for a Browning gold 10 or the SP- 10 . you get multi choke versatility and reducd felt recoil, and if you go for the light gold 10 you get a slick handling shotgun for a 10 bore that i think you will like. Just my opinion here.
  15. The Lincoln Over and unders were sadly not all created equal, the late 80s early 90s lincolns were made by rizzini, and were quite good quality had a selective triger and ussualy came with no sling swivels. Now my reason for mentioning the swivels, some time in the 1993 /94 period from memory, Nickerson started marketing a slightly different 10bore over and under, it did come with sling swivels and it had a shalower more squared off action to the earlyer Rizzini guns, and was a muck cruder constructed shotgun and i knew of one that gave issue straight off from new and never was totaly reliable. So you want to be looking for the right lincoln, the Rizzini made ones. I think they will be getting thin on the ground now though. The AYA matador is not as robustly constructed as your basque and it is considerably lighter, the ballance and handling is much better though and they handle allmost as good as a game gun, and wuld be my choice in double barrel 10bore. There were a few san marco over and under 10bores about back in the day, these were typicaly middle of the road italian quality and probably a little better quality than the rizzini Lincolns, but finding one may be a problem.
  16. I have tried many types of waterproof cloathing for stalking , But the best i have come accross is permatex i have a roe smock and trousers by nomad gear, that is breathable and totaly waterproof and keeps you warm too warm at times. It is a material that does hold the water and is slow to dry, but its quiet and tough wearing, take a look at this clothing you may like it.

    Teal shooting

That part is critical to any well utilised flight pond..
  18. Reloading Its the only way to get truly effective ammunition, but at that price its getting close to being a practical solution, if they were a little faster i could take to them.
  19. Atlas SB460Ls 15 quid off amazon never had cold hands since, but dont expect any fassion compliments.
  20. I got a box 25 of 1s the 36 gram and a handfull of 3s i chronoed them today five cartridges 1 s and i would say my findings were slightly higher than your 1400 to 1430 my lowest of the 5 being a 1454 fps the highesr 1477fps i checked the chrono with eley tenex amo was ok. Whatever it is not 1600+ fps. And even if you allowed for a less damp cold day i doubt you would ever hit the claimed speed. Shot through an 1187 with indian creek .710 . 50yard 54---53---60---50---44 , in 30 inch that choke and barrel have done better but for 50 yard and 8 quid a box its not all bad imo.

    Bismuth

I rate Bismuth i make my own shot in an old Royal shotmaker , it will only produce up to shot size 3 english, and i have no option but to buy or mould large shot. Moulding gets me AAA for my Evans double 8 bore but it is very time consuming. Bismuth can be purchased in many forms for droping your own shot, steel works get it in pellet form and it is quite cheap but Bismuth is drossy (dirty) and losses can be significant, It is perhaps best for anyone wanting to try and drop some Bismuth shot to buy it in ingot form from minor metal supliers , i have used this company Lowden metals of Halesowen, many times before and they will sell it in 20kg ingots or small ingots you could put straight in to the melt with whatever percentage tin you decide upon. New jacket

I purchased the Rivers West Eider jacket 2 years ago now, i think it is the best wildfowling jacket i have ever had. Had several sports chief jackets that did quite well but nothing compared to the Rivers West.
