Was it clear skies in your area last night? If so the scarcity of rabbits could be down to the full moon lighting you up. It certainly makes a noticeable difference around here. So much so that I don't bother on clear nights. Give it a week and wait for a nice dark night and try again.

Most rape around here is blown down the legs of a sub-soiler straight into the wheat stubble. Usually done when it's too wet for the combine to work so most of the rape is now in.

Look at it another way, if you're telling the farmer that there aren't that many birds around......does he really need any crop protection???

We only see the odd Kite around here, I guess they haven't worked their way this far north yet? I do have problems with Sparrow Hawks around the Partridge pens though. Tawny Owls seem to harrass the Pheasant poults a lot as well.

The problem is that the 'experts' are mostly about protecting Buzzards, so only see (or report) what they want to. Meanwhile those of us that are about protecting our poults see the buzzards as they really are. Most of the rabbits that I shoot are left as buzzard fodder, yet still they take the difficult to get at live poults, and leave the easy dead rabbits.

The problem is Pav, you're obviousely spending far too much time out in the fields shooting, and not enough time on here talking about it .

Jeez I thought we had it bad in Northants Mark! The most I've seen together was 13 circling on a thermal whilst I was out feeding one day a couple of years ago.

I've always had problems with Buzzards taking poults, maybe losing 1 a day in one of the pens. I've actually seen a Buzzard sat on poults in the pen on many occasions. Too many of the blighters around in Northants! Probably as much of a problem is owls, as these also take poults when they are first released. My old mentor showd me a trick of cutting the flat nail head off a 4" nail, and hammering one into the top of each pen post. This stops them sitting on the posts in wait for a poult. The old CD's on a length of string also works well.

Ok here's a scenario that really happened.....a lad pays £500 for a pedigree Springer pup with fantastic working lines on both sides, turns out to be a **** worker, and was eventually given away as a pet, despite him having 30 years experience of training spaniels. Same lad pays £250 for a springer x cocker (Lets call it a Sprocker for the sake of argument), this dog turns out to be an exceptional worker. In this scenario the lad eventually got an exceptional working spaniel, so is £250 still a ridiculous price to pay for a mongrel? Similar situation to myself, at the end of the day I have an exceptional working spaniel (Sprocker mongrel), who gives a damn if it is not a pedigree?....not me or the many other happy Sprocker owners that have good working dogs.

It would show that the parents have a pedigree from which the working lines can be traced. Springer x springer, cocker x cocker, or springer x cocker, working lines means you have a better chance of turning out pups that will work, as long as the owner is capable and willing to put the time in. I have Sprockers and they work as well as any of the pure bred Springers and Cockers on the shoots that I 'keeper on.

Therefore it would be adviseable for foxnet22 to do as he himself suggested, and check with his FEO, to see what the requirements are in his area. I wouldn't have thought a plea of "I didn't know I couldn't shoot them because I didn't ask" would stand up too well.

Not sure that is correct. Fairly certain 'fox' is a condition all of its own, and is not covered by the 'vermin' condition.

I don't agree with you there Mike. My view is the Kennel Club and many of it's show breeders are causing more genetic mutations than simply crossing a springer with a cocker. All you have to do is look at the likes of the English Bulldog, Boxer, Daschund, and many more that have been inbred so tightly that the poor ******* can't breath, walk etc etc.
