mayfly36
For the woodcock I love this time off the year, cold mornings, frost on the ground, springer flushing into the bright sunlight, well you all know what i mean.
Doc Holliday
I've always wanted to try woodcock. My mate shot one when we did a spot of rough shooting last year (I had the mallard). When he was telling someone about it, he was told it wasn't really on (?) as they have quite a hard journey from Scandinavia. Any reason why some folk frown on shooting Woodcock? mayfly36
October/november time, full moon brings em on. We get our fair share, even gettin out flushing them is good crack, a lot off heavy undergrowth though to beat through.

I remember getting to the crest of a local mountain, very heavy ground, was knackered and did exactly that, with both barrels!

mayfly36
"havnt seen many wood cock round here, get the odd snipe but thats about it" Babbyc, i go out with the old man now and again over camlough mountain areas. We walked our way through knee high marshland one afteroon and were bombarded by snipe, needless to say we might as well threw sticks at them, couldnt hit a good current. Thats the day the springer flushed a big hare, we got it though

Another farmer turns and said he seen a fella on his land with a pointer me: 'that was me too'. Third farmer turns and says well there was a serious amount of shooting in the evening. Me: that was the brother doin clays with his girlfriend! All 3 in the one day. The noise of a 12g really does travel!

monkeyboots
bit early for the woodcock my way yet but when they do come in ive loads of places to shoot them although i do restrict myself on the numbers i shoot as i dont like eating them but my daughter and stepson like them, id a good season at them last year and in the course of a day last season i would flush mayabe 20 - 30 woodcock at different farms i shoot but then ive loads of farms to shoot as i work in a animal feeds mill makeing feeds for cows, sheep etc, and threw that job with daily contact with farmers ive got loads of farms to shoot over the years and a lot of the farms i only got permisson to shoot cos they knew me from work and didnt allow any shooting so its a handy job to be in if your into shooting at 1 time the feed mill i worked in before it closed 2 years ago had 120 regular customers(farmers) and i had over 50 of them that allowed me to shoot their land so as i say i have loads of farmrs to go to shoot woodcock and ive now started in a new feeds mill and that has gained me a few more farms to shoot as they have a lot of different customers from the last mill i worked in and as im getting to know the new farmers then more permission will follow

Aled
Woodcock are my favourite quarry. Last year we saw a huge amount and they were everywhere, at the base of sparse hedges, as well as in deep cover, 1 week left of the fishing season, then its rough shooting time. Sadly i've not got a dog ...yet, so need to rely on mates a bit. Got quite a bit of rough shooting permission around where i live, advantage of being born and brought up in the valley. A bit of frost in late October and we're off. Cheers Aled
mayfly36
Full moon, clear sky wont be long sorting out a bit off frost, then the midnight flight begins.

mayfly36
What does tannyoky charge for the clays.
Ozzy Fudd
think its £4.50 or £5 for a token for dtl, etc, but we usually head into the sporting with a counter, works out at 16 or 17p per clay (i think)
