WGD
You can eat the brain but it's generally the innards you spread on toast after roasting the bird whole.

Dr D
nearly hit one last night with the car. I sometimes shoot forestry plantations in county Tyrone. There are piles of woodcock up there when the conditions are right. I have pushed up 60 birds day, never managed to shoot more than a dozen though. Problem is hitting them. Also the firs are planted on top of heather which is really tough going for the dogs. You need a good team of spaniels for county Tyrone. Can't wiat till the frosts come
Ballymac
Dr D you know what they say "Tyrone amoung the bushes" can you tell me who to contact regarding shooting of forestry ground or do you have a mate who works for the forestry and he gets you on? Dr D
I have some friends who have forestry service land leased out. But, I see Ballymac your from the county. I always assumed the local boys had a unwritten right of access up there. At least that's what I have always been told. Not of course that I would advocate it, but there are a number of large blocks of woodland in the sperrins Tyrone/fermanagh border were you could shoot all day and believe me no one is going to come asking you what you are doing. The wilder the country the better it is for the woodcock (which usual means halfway up a mountain) and there are surpisingly few people either capable or willing to tramp those hills in search of a bit of shooting. or anything else for that matter. A knock on a local farmers door usually see you right. I have always found that once you have name anyone who stops you is more than pleasant. Dr D
i also shot over forestry close by that place Gareth a number of years ago. There fair old head of woodcock in them hills south of fivemiletown. Is that the place that had the grouse shoot on it!!! I see they say you not allowed to shoot a grouse if you push one. It would be b***** tempting. I have always wanted to bag a grouse. A friend got two last year up near limavady. But I think that area has quite few knocking around. Whitebridges
"Cock forward" my favourite shout and game bird. In 30+ years never had a right and left. Harnser
very sporting birds shot on the wing with a .22 rimfire . Proberbly my favourite of all the game birds ,so much so that I am very reluctant to shoot them anymore . Harnser .
Dr D
.22 they sit pretty tight, why don't just dive and catch them with your barehands. then you could practice catch and release and wouldn't have to wrestle with your conscience Edited October 23, 2009 by Dr D
Glensman
Could have had 2 grouse last season but let them go. They're way to scarce to be shooting!
Dr D
I know. never pushed one myself, but I understand there are parts of the sperrins that still have quite agood head of grouse?!?! Guess you should really head to Scotland if you want to shoot one though.
Piebob
One of the Estates near me have been spending heavily on grouse management and most of the neighbouring estates are watching with interest and, I suspect, a bit of envy. Loads of keepers on the ground, and vigorous vermin control, they have been shooting bags of up to 140 brace if I recall correctly, possibly more. There have been local stories of birds being shipped in, but IMHO that's just sour grapes. Apparently they have had up to 70 (yes, 70) beaters per day at £40 per head to make sure they show up! So, £3K for the beaters alone if you throw in a few cans of beer. It's an expensive day! Edited October 24, 2009 by Piebob
Dr D
I was thinking more along the lines of an end of season walk up for a couple of brace. 140 brace you want to have bit of cash about you for that.

Assume this is in Glenoo Mountains outside of fivemiletown. Also do you have links to forestry tenders, there used to be some on C.A website but they seem to have stopped that now. Anyone heading to Tyrone for woodcock and want an extra dog (springer)and gun for company give me a shout. Found the link for forestry land, has got me thinking.... anyone want to start a new club Edited November 3, 2009 by Ballymac
