have to say i would expect more people to come forward if shots were actually fired, as any shot even silenced rimfire can be very loud in an inclosed place

not sure about how genuine it is, if it is true at least someone is taking action against these people.

An American friend emailed me today, and part of her email was........

"If these idiots ever picked up a history book instead of a Koran they might see what London looked like during the battle of Britain, and they would realize that they will never defeat Britain with bombs !"

You cant treat this news article as gospel because we don't know if the guy was a terrorist or even if this event took place. It wouldn't be the first time that a trigger happy policeman has gunned down someone for no reason; Table leg. It wouldn't even be the first time that someone has made up a story like this just to get famous out of a tragic event. Five bullets seems like a bit of a fantasy.

If this event is in fact real then this raises serious questions about how the police are handling this (if in fact it was the police and not an intelligence agency). If the man was held under control of the police and therefore an opportunity arised of arresting him then why wasn't this done instead of effectively executing him? This isn't a banana republic that we a residing in. I thought this was the British Isles where everyone is entitled to a fair trial. By gunning people down in the street then aren't we sinking to the level of the terrorist?

Craws

If as you say you don't know the facts why are you then guessing what happened. Why not wait and find out? It is easy to sit behind a keyboard and moralise/hypothesize about something you know little about.

P

Hold your horses. Just read my post again, I wasnt guessing anything. I would tell you face to face my opinion, this just happens to be on the internet. I'm not scared to excercise my right to free speach.

I have a friend in the Met Anti Terrorist Branch. I asked the question about 'what if he was unarmed etc'?

His reply was this (altohugh it isn't an official statement!!!)

The rules of engagement have been changed, suicide bombers should be shot with a view to killing them, rather than 'disablin' them - the Met's normal firearms protocol - this policy change was announced on the news at lunchtime today.

This guy had been under surveillance for a number of hours and had been followed into the tube station in an operation involving over 20 officers. On being challenged he leapt over a security barrier and headed for the platform. With the officers in pursuit, caling for him to stop, he tripped trying to get onto a train. As he fell to the ground an officer made the decision to shoot in case he was wearing some sort of device that would kill the officers, the offender and people on the train. There was no way of telling, if a device was being worn, how it would be activated or if activation was possible if the person was being restrained.

The bullets used are subsonic low velocity rounds, to prevent riccochets and collateral damage. The guy had an unusually heavy jacket on and the officer decided to take no chances. END

Personally, I think it will become public knowledge that this 'victim' was involved in the bombings yesterday and had been identified by the personal papers found at one of the failed bomb sites.

No one runs awayt from an armed policeman 'by accident' and certainly doesn't willfully leap over barriers.

The press report that the Muslim people fear a shoot to kill policy. Why would anybody fear that, unless they are doing something wrong? I think this is a positive message to potential bombers (terrorists) - come into our playground, mess with our classmates and we'll f*uk you up bigtime......should have adopted the policy years ago.

PS Lady Pieman works in london and I fear for her safety every day she now gets on a train. If it keeps her safe I'll handload the bullets if required.

I've watched this with horror over the last couple of weeks. The police come in for a lot of critisism on this forum. I say, "he who hesitates is lost" in the current climate down there. Mistakes may be made, but hey that's life.

It's time the British goverment and it's Representatives got tougher, with real Law Breakers.

China could certainly teach the UK how to deal with their criminals no Sat TV and Snooker tables I can tell you!!! Rapists, executed! Murderers executed! Tax evader executed... but maybe that is taking it a bit far!

If an armed police man tells you to do something..........YOU DO IT!!!!!!!!!

Anyone who doesn't, especially after recent events, deserves to get shot!

That is assuming they have a basic command of the english language MRobinson.

.............just imagine

If you were a visiter in a foreign country, and didnt understand the language, and 3 burly blokes yelled at you and chased you with a pointed a gun..... I would envisgae that you too would **** your pants and run like Joe ****!!!!!!!!

Lets hope that this was indeed a legitimate killing of a terrorist suspect, and nothing more sinicter!!! :(

Paul,

I don't think the Met would have spend half of yesterday and all this morning following a poor, unsuspecting visitor or non-english speaking national :(

It was interesting listening to the news at 1pm on BBC Radio 4.

The Interviewer was talking to an eye witness and the questions were all slanted towards, "Where the Police acting correctly".

Questions like,

"Did you hear any warnings shouted by the Police ?",

"Did the Police identify themselves during the chase ?",

"Did the man being chased appear to resist before he was shot ?",

"Did the man appear to have a bomb, or a weapon ?",

"Was any attempt made to subdue the man, as an alternative to shooting him ?"

........the answer to all these questions and others similar was, "No".

I think the Police may get some flack over this from certain parts of the Media.

Just imagine the sympathetic outcry, when we find out that he came from a broken home. :(

Things is though, most countries learn English as it is the international language. Even India with its 20 or so different states, all of which speak a different language, actually use the English language when it comes to court etc, as this is the common language spoken!

At least now, the terrorists will be thinking twice. They normally expect to get away with things and i'm sure they feel as though they can hide out pretty well. When infact this shows that they are not safe and can be found.

I feel sorry for the London'ers, it must be turning their world upside down. I've spoken to some of my customers in Regent St. and surrounding areas, all complaining things are very quiet on the business front. I hope the Police find and finish all the would be terrorists.

Regards,

Axe.

Sadly I've been expecting this development for a long time. No doubt there will be initial shock and outrage expressed by people in many quarters. However - what else were the police to do?

In Israel suicide bombers have been known to work in pairs. One carries the bomb and another a remote triggering device. If number one has second thoughts, or is tackled (or killed) number two sets off the device.

Can you imagine what the cops were thinking as they chased him? If he was carrying a nail bomb a LOT of people were very close to death - including most of the police. For my money they deserve a medal. I hope they get one.

(Before anyone bleats - all the news agencies are now running this story - it looks genuine)
