Here's a good website for those that shoot CPSA Registered comps regularly, it shows your individual ranking within your home County :D , also lists out all of your scores going back to the year 2000  , (a few forgettable ones there..!!).

It also shows a graph of scores which shows how you're doing year on year, good fun. :good:

I've just found out the last time I shot Grimsthorpe was in May 2003, what..???, how time flies..!!

Yep, it would take something that was not the CPSA to come up with something that:

1. worked

2. was useful

I am disappointed that despite the massively massive coup at the last AGM that was to impact massively on the world of CPSA registered shooting, it all appears to have remained the same with no discernable change.

Well, you can't say I didn't warn you..................................but wait until the next AGM  , I have it on good authority that things WILL change................but don't hold your breath..!!

Well it appears that outside Essex all clay shooting is organised, run and scored by only the CPSA.

In backwater Essex we have lots of clay shoots which manage to operate without the assistance of the CPSA. In the last 3 weeks I have shot 3 different grounds all of which were banged out (couple of hundred people plus) as well as running "newbie" starter stands etc; and not a CPSA stand in sight.

So, I (personally) am still struggling to see or understand precisely what the CPSA does for shooting.

Yes, the CPSA has little appeal to the guy who just wants to go out and shoot a few floppy clays on the end of the barrel at his local straw baler, then go down the boozer for the rest of the day and brag to his mates about what a good clay shot he is.

He doesn't worry about insurance, and he doesn't realise he's being rogered by these micky mouse grounds that pay back not one penny in prize money but offer cheap, tacky trophies or a box of Eley Grand Prix's and a handshake as a prize.

But, as you know only too well from your trips to "proper" CPSA Registered grounds like High Lodge, it's a different ball game at these grounds, they attract the more dedicated and committed individual, who's keen to actually achieve something in the sport.

Anyway, I didn't start this thread as a CPSA bashing topic, that subject's been done to death on this forum.

Cat don't most normal people go for a round of clays with their mates? No squadding, no telephone entries... you know, pitch up and have a laugh with your mates. Mind you, maybe squadding does you a favour eh?

If you are into it for "insurance and prize money" well knock yourself out

My insurance requirements are met by BASC (or could be sourced from a broker for a fiver) and short of a national event the prizes at 99% of registered competitions wouldn't cover motoring expenses, entry fee and cartridges.

A little look at that CPSD webby shows that the majority have only a couple of hundred birds shot to their name, indicating shooting maybe 1 or 2 registered events. I still say the majority of shooting takes places away from the CPSA, which makes them a failure in my books

EDIT:

Of the 221 names listed in the rankings for Essex ESP:

* 117 of those names had shot 300 or less birds (i.e. 3 registered events) [53% of County total]

* of those 117 names, 99 of those names had shot 200 or less birds (i.e. 2 registered events) [45% of County total]

* of those, 71 had shot just *1* registered event (i.e. 120 birds or less) [32% of County total]

I tell you what, with those statistics you can actually measure the failure of the CPSA, although they don't include those who are members and who haven't shot any registered event.

Mungler - I have to agree. It's some years since I was a CPSA member, but I went through the averages out of interest to see who was still doing the registered shoots. A few familiar names - John Stafford, John Twigg, Colin Foden, Graham Stirzaker, Kevin Mayor etc. I was frankly astonished as to just how few were actually entering.

Gordon, those scores don't even include those who haven't been classified or who haven't shot a registered event.

Actual *active* CPSA members are but a handful; probably in the region of about 50 or less per County i.e. showing as having shot say 10 events in the year - mind you, we shoot a couple of haybales a weekend and so we would achieve 10 events in a maximum of 10 weekends (not a whole year).

Now, this shows either that people join the CPSA, classify, shoot 2 registered events and then pack up completely OR they end up shooting their local haybales with their mates and the massive majority of clay shooters.

Very interesting website. With the back end data you could work out the most active / inactive counties, disciplines etc etc.

Hats off to the bloke that did it - he must love a spreadsheet!

That sounds like a preview of Chapter 4, Paragraph 2 of the Clay Shooters Book of Excuses :P

Yes, I borrowed it from the library in West Mersea, MC reluctantly gave it back after being threatened with a massive fine. :hmm::good:

Really looking forward now to this non CPSA Registered event.

  • 2 weeks later...

Cat,

Can you get that Orac fella to knock some graphs up showing regional membership divided between discipline etc.

And also showing levels of birds shot e.g. 0-100, 101-200, 201-300 etc etc.

I reckon:

1. it would make interesting reading

2. the source data would then become restricted by the CPSA and access turned off :good:
