Frenchieboy
I am picking up a new CZ 452 Varmint in 17HMR at the beginning of next week (Already threaded for a moderator). I have a reasonable set of scopes ready for it (Bushnell Sportsman 6-24 X 50IR) so I will be nearly ready for action. The only thing that remains is to chose a Moderator for it. I would welcome your thoughts on which moderator might be best suited for this particular model and caliber of rifle. (I do realise that there will be very mixed opinions and it is much a matter of personal preference) I do not want to go "overboard" with the price by getting a dedicated .17 caliber mod (At least for the time being) so is there much difference between say the SAK, the Parker Hale, etc? What would you reccomend? Edited November 9, 2009 by Frenchieboy
cooter
You can go for the budget end SAC, but from personal experience they last 1000 rounds if you are lucky (mine lasted less than 500 before the first two sets of baffels burnt out). Calbre specific models are the better option. I use a DM80, and after over 3000 rounds it is still working very well. Although I have not used it, the Whisper comes well recommended, but it cots more than the DM80. What ever you get make sure you can fully strip and clean it, as the .17 HMR is a dirty girl. George1990
I rate the Edgar Brother's Sirocco, as does Shootinguk http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/guns/rifles/38...rs_review_.html Looks good on the varmint too The Wildcat Whisper also looks nice on it. Not sure about performance as it was a .22 specific one i put on, just to see if it looked good for future reference
marlin vs
Around 3000 rounds through my Sak mod, and it's still perfect, I clean it whe I clean my .17 hmr which is about every3 or 4 hundred rounds.

Billy.
I know I'll just sound like I'm just supporting my own set up, but In a magazine they did a really thorough test and said that the PES mods are the best for the .17HMR. al4x
Frenchie on the original question the SAK will be better than the Parker Hale IMHO Its worth spending more on the scope than on the moderator
Beardo
SAK is the best budget one. I'm just about to upgrade to the LEI .17hmr specific which i've heard very good things about.
Gelliot
I recently tried an old Parker-Hale, an SAK and a Swift back-to-back on my 17 CZ Varmint. No discernible difference to my untrained ear. I've kept the Swift on it because the shape of the moderator blends in nicely to the barrel, making it look like one piece. HTH. bullet boy
A SAK will be good enough.
