petethegeek
In a somewhat belated attempt to stay relevant, the Ordnance Survey recently announced that it would be making its maps available online as from next year. As a precursor they have also made public an API which is intended to facilitate website developers incorporating that data into their pages. In order to try this out I have put together a very simple web page >>here<< that should display a small map showing the location of any shooting ground that has been selected in the drop down boxes. Currently there are only a few grounds available, which just happen to be ones that have been mentioned on here recently. I am keen to extend the database to see how it performs in the real world, so to that end - and also in the hope that it may actually turn out to be vaguely useful - I would be grateful to anyone providing me with the names of any grounds for which they have the location details. For obvious reasons an OS grid reference is the preferred format, but I have the facility to convert from lat/long if necessary. The web site itself is still very much a work in progress, thus I am more than happy for any suggestions/comments for improvements. These will be fully analysed before being adopted, adapted or quietly ignored as the mood happens to take me. PS Would any of the Worsley crowd be kind enough to confirm for me that Worsley is indeed in Cheshire, and anyone familiar with any of the grounds currently listed provide fine tuning for the markers where needed. Chard
PS Would any of the Worsley crowd be kind enough to confirm for me that Worsley is indeed in Cheshire, and anyone familiar with any of the grounds currently listed provide fine tuning for the markers where needed. The PC answer is that Worsley is in Greater Manchester The fact is that the term "Greater Manchester" is only used by politicians, civil servants and Southern shandy-drinking handbags. Mancs would say it's in Lancashire, where it used to be (it's in the borough of Salford) Definitely not in Cheshire Edited November 25, 2009 by Chard
Chard
Worsley is actually located on the track somewhere above the word "Wood" of "Botany Bay Wood"
Paladin
Well done you If you could incorporate Post Codes and or Satnav co-ordinates I could see this being very usefull. What about nearest gun shop to the ground. Paladin
Chris Bb
Great idea! If we all contribute at "grass roots" level all the little shoots that don't advertise will be included. Good for when going on holiday and needing an excuse to take the gun, "Look, darling, there's a friendly little shoot just down the road." PMing south Hants that I know of to get the ball rolling. petethegeek
I can confirm to you that JJ's is not in Essex, it is in Kent. Definitely not in Cheshire  Thanking you both kindly. (Cracking start for a mapping application, huh?) It would appear that anyone submitting a ground will also need to let me know the county as well. Worsley is actually located on the track somewhere above the word "Wood" of "Botany Bay Wood" The marker is now over the word "wood" as suggested. Who needs Universal Transverse Mercator projections? I can see the birth of a whole new co-ordinate system here. If you could incorporate Post Codes and or Satnav co-ordinates I could see this being very usefull. Next phase (v0.0.2) should see the markers clickable in order to display information such as satnav co-ordinates, telephone numbers etc. The underpinning OS software will also support searching on a postcode, so it should be possible to have a facility to show all the known grounds within a given distance of a selected postcode. What about nearest gun shop to the ground. Good idea. Who knows, they might even contribute cartridges in order to be included...

clayman
While I was at the CPSA as their Safety and Training Manager 2001 -7 one of the tasks I undertook was to acquire a licensed copy of the full OS map system, and from this to allocate all CPSA grounds with their National Grid Reference. This was done to provide specific information for such purposes as Emergency services locating a shoot / ground as in many cases no post code, street address existed ( the shoot is in the woods on the ridge behind Joe's farm off Bottom Lane down the turning after the Dog and Duck or SQ 1234 5678 accurate to the shoot location within 100m. For police ID / Ambulance of the location, and aerial maps etc this Nat Grid ref is invaluable, and this information should be readily available from CPSA HQ for all its currently registered and affiliated grounds. I also left maps with all grounds named by Grid Ref in their system, whether they are maintained or in use I don't know, but a comprehensive record on the OS maps and Grid Refs on all grounds was left as part of my job initiatives and in the interests of promoting the future of the sport I would expect the CPSA will happily provide this information to you. petethegeek
i've added catton hall and webton feild sports Ian, thanks to you and everyone else who has sent me co-ordinates and other details. Please keep them coming. Is this Google Map any help? http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&...amp;t=h&z=6 Nice link. That's very similar to what I am looking to achieve, but with the OS maps and a less 'googlified' user interface. First impressions are that the OS development tools are a lot more primitive and restrictive than the google ones. However, the OS do make exceedingly nice maps, so I shall certainly be continuing to extend the site in both content and functionality. Again, many thanks for all the feedback, suggestions and help thus far - stay tuned.
humperdingle
There's something very similar over on another forum... Am I allowed to say it's name? But you can search for clay grounds, rifle ranges, gunsmiths, gun shops etc. Wish I had the knowledge to start-up something like this, though... well done. Hacker
Nice idea! That's very similar to what I am looking to achieve, but with the OS maps and a less 'googlified' user interface. Can I ask why you would want to use the OS maps as opposed to hooking into Google maps? Personally being able to see different views especially the satellite, is much more useful than a simple map view? Also from a technical point of view are you planning making the site valid xhtml? Personally being able to see different views especially the satellite, is much more useful than a simple map view? Obviously I cannot speak for Pete but on a personal basis, whilst I agree that the satellite view can be very useful, I find that Google Maps takes an age to download and I much prefer OS mapping to anything else currently on offer. Thank God OS have finally offered this service and we have people like Pete who can utilise it and offer their services to help us. Come on, everybody, lets get details of all those "straw bale" shoots on the map!

petethegeek
this is the location of our ground. Widdrington Gun Club. Northumberland could you add this to your list Done and thank you. Can I ask why you would want to use the OS maps as opposed to hooking into Google maps? As I mentioned earlier, my primary motivation is to give the OS online data a test drive. If it results in something that other people can use and benefit from, that is a welcome bonus. (Can you guess I'm not a dotcom millionaire?) Also whilst I have nothing against google maps, I am - unfortunately - old enough to have grown up with the paper based Ordnance Survey variety. Also from a technical point of view are you planning making the site valid xhtml? There was a time when I would have regarded that as a priority. That time didn't last very long. Don't get me wrong, I am all for standards conformance, it's just that I'd rather concentrate on getting everything working first. Just out of interest, are you seeing any problems as a result? Come on, everybody, lets get details of all those "straw bale" shoots on the map! It is indeed the straw/hay balers that I am particularly interested in adding. I know from personal experience how frustrating it can be finding local shoots/clubs when you first start. The club I am currently a member of shoots only a few miles from where I live, but I had been shooting for almost a year before I discovered them. petethegeek
Not 'straw bale' but not the easiest of places to find: Thanks - location entered. Rest of the details should be visible before long. No just noticed because I had my developer tools turned on when I checked the site out, and its one of my pet hates. If that gives you the jitters, then I would strongly recommend you keep well away from the rest of the code. Really clever idea. Where are you going to put it. Have you thought about advertising on the site. Gunsmiths specific to the county, web links etc. If you click on the 'Career Opportunities' tab you will find that the position of Commercial Manager is still open...
