Here's a picture of my gun, bluing taken off and hand polished before bluing again.

Thought it would give you an idea.....

cheeers for that m8 to be honest it looks the mutts nuts does look differant the only thing with polishing is it will need a clear coat on it to stop the barrels oxidiseing, but credit where credit is due well done looks great can,t wait to have the time to get stuck into mine.

hi guys just going to throw this out there, i,ve had a bit of an idea to i,m prove the look of my bettinsoli 12g o/u,pretty much decided i,d like to chrome or nickle plate the barrels instead of haveing the traditional blueing as a finish why ? something differant and why not just wondering weather anyone has come accross this before i,m sure someones decided that they wanted there gun to look shiney lol.i no the process of dipping a metal object in a tank to acheive a uniform coating but any ideas on how i would go about blanking the barrels off without damageing the bores, same as i say just an idea i,m banding around at the mo so any suggestions would be welcome cheers happy shooting

Do as you wish, its your gun :good:

But what I will tell you is you will never shoot a game animal with that gun again, shine will be seen for miles

Things come, things go. It was quite common in this area in the early 1960s. They were poorly electroplated as 'foreigners' at a local factory. Straight on to a complete action, the chrome would start to flake on the sharp edges.

Three examples I remember clearly were:

A double barrelled hammer 12 by Charles Partridge. I once owned it for a very short time and sold it for four quid. (I could not stand the chuckles.)

A Greener G.P. 12 with the under lever re-fashioned like a Winchester '73.

And my 'Boeller Blitz' single 12 that was plated three owners on.

All posers' guns and quite silly, looking back!

Im sure John Bidwell uses a chromed Winchester pump on exhibitions

Quite a few pump guns can be had in marine stainless for costal work.

4th one down on this page is a Winchester.

That looks quite good Cos, how did you get to this stage, just steel wool and polish?

Never reblued a gun before do you need any chemicals or anything??

Thanks :good:

nevermind found your other thread, so after debluing the barrels, what would you use to protect the metal if you wanted to keep the un-blued look?

I wouldn't know for sure as I haven't done this, but I would have thought some sort of clear coat to prevent the barrels oxidising (rusting).

If this is something you wanted to do, why not speak to the company I bought the bueing from, they specialise in metal finishes, and are very helpful.

I've found 3M scotch brite pads from a motor factor removes blueing, try Solvo Autosol to polish the metal and bring them back to the 'white' If you like the look then you need to make them rust proof.

If car/paint laquer is your choice (it will chip) stand the can in a bucket of hot water, while you degrease wash and dry them, warm the barrels with a hair dryer to make sure they are dry, and spray on the laquer! Whats it going to cost you? :good: £20 and a couple of hours. ;) If you dont like it  strip it off and re-blue!

Hi New to this forum

I chromed my Franchi AL48 semi auto barrel 20 years ago with no problems, had the receiver dipped to expose the Ali,

Then 5 years ago purchased the hunter model had that chromed and dipped.

As these guns are recoil action, heavy loads are now expensive, so i purchased Fabarm H368 gas semi auto had that chromed, slight issue i plugged both ends of the barrel to protect the internal lining, but one of the plugs came out in the heating process and the acid scored the lining, the gun works fine, but would effect the resale value.

Never had any issues with the sun light hitting the barrel, only use these guns for clays.

Couple of years ago you could buy a manufactured chromed Marocchi 100 sporter O/U

Why would i chrome these guns, because they look different and stand out, while everyone looking my gun they not looking at my poor score.

Why not have a look at the decorative patterns on this website?

Apparently they also specialise in chrome plating. Got a quote off them last year for the barrels for an O/U. Was £50 for the coating and £15 carriage which is very reasonable. Have a look at the rifles in their showcase. Some lovely examples :good:
