safetyfirst
I've seen quite a few folk list their collections in their signatures, which makes for interesting reading and has answered a few questions I had about what kind of collections the police deem reasonable for a start! Thing is though, if someone wanted to steal some firearms, all they'd have to do is find someone with a big list and then befriend them until they had their home address.... I know that FEO guidelines when assessing security mention the FEO should consider if it is widely known that the applicant has weapons on the premises.... Am I to cynical and cautious? -oXo-
This is one of the reasons you should not disclose your address on a public forum. Like it tells you in THIS POST
safetyfirst
This is one of the reasons you should not disclose your address on a public forum.Like it tells you in THIS POST Few people would be daft enough to do that but you've only got to arrange to meet someone then they've got control over you and can force you to lead them back to the premises where the huge collection of guns is...... We all know not to disclose our addresses on public forums but my question is should we list our guns on them?
Silhouette
I've never understood the mentality of listing everything you've got. It happens on every forum of every type. Perhaps it's a macho thang.

Perhaps it's a macho thang. I can understand it, many people are proud of their collections and at the same time, unable to share them with may people, a shooting forum is a great place to exchange ideas about your hobby. I could see people offering money for things on people's lists, sending them messages to exchange tips on particular guns etc...I can understand why some people do it... Chard
I don't see a lot of difference between the suggested scenario and meeting anybody anywhere in a shooting-related capacity. I meet new faces all the time at clay grounds and invariably end up shooting with a few of them, arranging trips etc. What are we to do? Sneak around in secret and pretend we don't shoot? I'd like to see them get my cabinet off the wall anyway, they'd have to demolish half the house
-oXo-
Realistically you shouldn't be in a position to fear someone invading your home but in todays enviroment I guess you shouldn't advertise your items like that. But on the other hand people do it because they are proud of what they own. I don't see a lot of difference between the suggested scenario and meeting anybody anywhere in a shooting-related capacity. steve_b_wales
Well I've listed mine. I'm not bothered who knows where I live and what I have in my house. Nearly everyone in my neighbourhood knows that i go shooting anyway. Plus, my house is fully alarmed and is like Fort Knox. My final protection is a few photographs of my ex Mother -In -Law spread strategically about the house. They will frighten off anyone. We all know not to disclose our addresses on public forums but my question is should we list our guns on them? In the same way what is to stop anyone at the clay ground following you home and catching you unawares? or a gun shop you have just bought a gun or some carts from? A certain amount of precautions should be taken but there is no need to go over the top with it all. I used to list my guns as when i first joined i thought it was the done thing as this was the first forum i joined but as i got to know the forum i took it down as i could see no need but thats me personal preference and all that George
berettaman
If anyone is still under the impression that your whole street dont know you go shooting yet, forget it the micheal pain character the nosey neighbour exists everywhere and they love to tell everyone else. then there is the people who watch you loading all your pigeon shooting gear into the jeep followed finally by a gun bag/slip,dont suppose they think its a funny shaped catapult by any chance , no its an everyday occourence, the lists are harmless,do as you please and i for one am not ashamed or worried with what i own

MC
I assume with a name like safetyfirst you are some kind of Health and safety bod who dreams up all kinds of non existent and far fetched scenarios in order to justify their existence. Does it really matter if people list their guns and some of the scenarios you have "made up" would require a certain kind of nutter to carry them out. Mungler
What about following a car home coming out of Bisley / Clay Ground / Gun Shop ? That seems a much more straightforward proposition doesn't it.

Mungler
why, are you proposing we do it? i was going to list my guns, but id end up having to list bb guns and crossbows as well to bulk out the list I am saying that getting all paranoid about listing your guns in your signature will not change the fact that being followed home from a clay ground or a visit to the gun shop is much more likely to be a security issue.
