rodp
Can anyone on this mine of information give me a couple of answers please. It looks like we've got a rat moved in under the patio steps. There's a broken brick (due to the frost) where half of it's missing and it looks like a rat has tunnelled under. So first, how many entrances will it have, and secondly, is there any way of getting it out such as gas or smoke etc. I'm thinking that if I can shift it I can either shoot it or the dog will have it. Any ideas folks, preferably without blowing the patio up. Thought about acetylene and a match but I may be pushing my luck there
Daveo26
It will probably just be a one holer. Do you feed the birds in your garden? more than likley mr rat has found a food source nearby and is possibly storing fodder under your step. The best thing to do is to buy bait from a hardware shop or garden centre But make sure it's toxic because some places sell compressed cardboard as nontoxic rat poison! and its pap. it will say Difenacoum or Bromadiolone on the container. first make sure there is no other food sources I.E bird feeders open bins nearby. Then bait making sure nothing else can get it Continue baiting until it stops going then repair the hole. All the best Dave.

Stopping the food supply is difficult as next door have a pet rabbit, I now know why they moved the pen away from the fence Ferrets a good idea but I was thinking of something a little more "instant" I wonder if CS gas would do the trick

After first carefully reading the relevant data sheet.

After first carefully reading the relevant data sheet. Not really hell bent on gas, mains electric would do Seriously though, gas just seemed a quick and clean answer. I would rather flush it out and get rid instead of just leaving a corpse to rot away. Just wondered if there was some miracle potion that rats cannot stand, it appears not
Dekers
The Gas smoke bombs are available professionally but I don't think you will find them at B&Q. Also potentially difficult to use in your situation! Anti Coagulant such as Bromabiolone or Difenacoum as already mentioned is probably the route, get plenty down and back fill the hole if you do not have the appropriate Rodent Monitor! Keep your pets and children away, but shouldn't be a problem, and Vitamin K is the antidote! Other bait such as chocolate or smelly fish, actually almost anything smelly, is likely to attract ratty, then Fens, Pro Victors rats or perhaps an air rifle. Just be careful he is dead before you approach and pick him up carefully with gloved hand and dispose of thoughtfully! Leptospirosis isn't fun! stubby
you can in fact buy rat repellent (B&Q) costs around £6, or just get a large rat trap and bait with sausage, but wire it in place, whether you use a rat trap or a fenn trap, make sure you can either push it into the hole, or leave just outside, but cover with an artificial tunnel, to keep within the law, saves catching non target species

Ferret Master
Borrow a ferret Whatever you do, don't put a ferret down a single hole rat hole. That rat will fight to the death and the only way out is through the ferret. So please ignore foolish comments like that. FM
Cranfield
You can get satchets of rat killer from any Hardware shop, I use Townex. Put the satchet into the hole, so that you can just see it. Keep doing this until the satchet doesn't move for 48 hours, then you know the rat(s) are dead. They decompose quickly and I have never noticed any smell. Evil Elvis
The hose trick is a good um, but do what I did make cage out of chicken wire to go round the hole to catch the rats...then you havent got to worry about how quick you are!!! Worked for me....
