Recommended Posts

Im STILL waiting on the FAC to hit the matt and have been looking at scopes as im fairly set on the rifles ill be buying.

Came across these on Optics warehouse and just wanted to know if anyone had had any experience with them?

Good / bad points would be appreciated.

Depends what you want to use it for. In daylight the Viper is nice and clear but low light isn't the best and under the lamp it can snow up if your eye relief isn't spot. For the price they're a damned good scope and what you get for the price you'll not get on others of the pricerange

I have a viper on my HMR and 243. I use it for deer and fox, and have had good results in low light for deer and under the lamp at night for fox.

I have used other scopes on friends rifles, many of which have been extremely expensive, but i find my vipers more than adequate and dont find them limiting in any way.

I am no expert however, but i think these are better than my bushnel

For the same sort of money you could get a Hawke Endurance 30IR. I have one (3-9x42) on my LR and find it works much better than the WTC 6.5-20x50 it replaced in low light.

I've never been a fan of illuminated reticles but the Hawke IR is just a red dot so doesn't distract, also as the dot is on the Front Focal Plane it helps with eye alignment to remove parallax errors when shooting at different distances as if your head/eye alignment isn't right the dot will not be in the centre of the crosshairs.

I bought the Hawke after being disappointed with the WTC in low light and did look at MTC but was put off by a number of people saying they worked ok but not in fading light.

Beautiful, cheers guys.

I need a scope in the £200 range that can be used at night, other than the hawke what would people recommend.

Im not too fussed about fixed or variable magnification, would like am IR but centre hairs only really.

Field adjustable turrest would be a good plus as well.

There's several so take your pick

Anything that will go on an air rifle will go on .22rf or .17hmr. I have a Tasco world Class on my rimmy and that does well under the lamp. HMR has a Simmons WTC 6.5-20x50 on it and that's very good in low light and under the lamp as well as being really clear in daylight. I've used a BSA Contender to good effect on .22 and .223. All well less than your £200 budget. Another one to consider is the Bushnell Sportsman range. Cheap and cheerful but robust and up to the job.

Unfortunately non of them have illuminated reticles but do you really need one or do you just fancy it?

That said, the specs you say you're looking for really pushes you towards the MTC range.

mtc optics are very clear and good quality. the IR models illuminate the scb reticle only

Just been looking at one with a german *4, thats illuminated, looks good, just illuminates a red dot at the centre of the hairs.

Just gonna look up at the menace.

Not essential, just the couple of times ive been out, in low light ive found it hard to quickly acquire the centre on the target.

SO thought a lowly IR would speed this up.

I have the MTC Taipan 4-16 x 50 mounted on my HMR, it has a built in sunshade and a choice of either red or green illumination on the centre cross only, the turrets are an uprated version of the Vipers, no expert but i am very happy with it, clear as a bell and very sharp at the ranges available to me (160m max) best thing i could suggest to you is go to your local dealer and look for yourself (Taipan optics are claimed to be same as the Viper but hand picked for best quality, so either should be comparable) or call MTC they were very helpfull and offered me the chance of calling in, but it was to far - Good Luck with your choice

I've got one of these on my hmr, seems very good in daylight but as i use 22lr for lamping then it's more than adequate. Lots of nice extras on them too, like metal flip up lens covers, sun shade, mounts. Not over keen on side focus scopes but as i usually lay up in one place with it it's not too much bother.

PS. nice idea with the turrets being exposed but lockable so it's simple to zero.

I have got a couple of IR scopes that you could try if you like and compare to the Leupold that doesn't have it. They are all Hawke scopes but it might help.
