Pigs.

I was covering a few pea fields yesterday on a "please the farmer" exercise.

The fields are being visited by a few pigeons, but not consistently, or in great numbers.

I shot a couple on the first field and then the birds disappeared, so I moved to the second field.

No hide, just a couple of shells out and I stood in a thick hedge with my back to an old orchard.

I shot 14 birds out of a possible 20, with 10 dropping in the orchard behind me.

As I knew the shooting wouldn't last long, I decided to pick up at the end of the session and after a couple of hours the birds disappeared.

I had to walk along the hedge to find a good place to get through the undergrowth and found an electric fence on the other side.

I couldn't imagine what the Farmer had in the orchard, as the sheep had been moved out weeks ago.

Then I heard the snuffling and squealing,a dozen big sows arguing over my dead pigeons.

I grabbed 5 , but they had the rest .

Just made a hard day even harder. :good:

I have shot a rabbit in with my pigs before, as you say before i got to it the pigs had ripped it to bits, not a lot left.

They are dustbins. You must have had the wind in yer chops Cranners otherwise you would have sniffed them? What are you doing deeking in to the the wind? :good:

Ask for a chop as you've been feeding the stock. :good:

I had no real option but to shoot facing into quite a strong wind, which is also the reason so many birds dropped behind me.

I might try the suggestion of asking for a chop or two, I did get a leg of lamb once from a farmer for shooting a couple of foxes.
