miraculously I've cut it off the house and the decking underneath is ok the windows are fine, both gutter end caps are off and there are surface marks on the render that will paint over and that is it, apart from god knows how many tons of tree to be cut up in the garden  I had thought I was about finished on this project house

What about the dog, 1st the HMR, and now this?

I hope she's ok!

dog was fine we were all inside at the time fortunately, though it even woke her so must have been loud! saturday had a bbq and 2 nephews and niece were playing there, my sister had been going to sit on the decking and fortunately didn't as there was no warning at all, about the most damage was to the chairs on the decking! Guess its a combination of wind and a really dry spell giving trees a hard time, bloody frightning really!

Good old willow or salix do have a habbit of twisting and failing the willows need a good coppice ever other year really to stop this happening.

Glad all was OK it shows how a freak accident can happen .

As for wood you need to store for two years min and then only on a logburner really as it will still spit and it does tar up the chimmey or flue.

Have you cut it up yet.

Regards OTH

I've cut it off the house and lost the main weight to it but will have to finish it after work, by my reckonings its a good 50ft tall as it spans the garden. It is naff all use for burning really tried some on the log burner and its hardly worth the effort, when its dry enough it goes up so fast its ridiculous. I think I'll end up splitting most of it drying enough to make it burn and bonfire. I've cut tons of fallen ones off this bit and thought I was done :good:

Zap if there was rear access you'd be more than welcome to it!

Yep I do a bit with trees on a large estate, and have had quite a few do the 'sudden death syndrome'. Mainly boughs dropping off, often Ash trees when it's dry - like now. I often wonder with Oak trees if it's part of the natural process to get rid of boughs as they get older in storms? Many tree huggers forget, trees grow then fall down - often there are no signs as to why or when they will fall ( or which way)

All I can say is I wasn't frightened by trees as I only ever came upon tham after they had fallen, untill standing by a few when thay are felled - big bang, alot of energy.

Lucky escape :good:

I actually enjoy that bit and knowing you have control is fine, its when they do it unexpected in windless conditions its an eye opener, We had Ash trees round the house I grew up in and they did it from time to time, I guess its a combination of amount of leaf and weight on the timber that occasionally they just go. This is a very big tree to just go with no creaking at all just a bang and a thud as it hit the ground
