shotgun sam
I am thinking of getting a remmy 700 for my open slot for a 308 but I was told that remmingston when the safety is on the bolt can still be opened and the round then falls out. This would not be a problem on the range but i would not like to be hunting and loose a round. Can anyone confirm this can happen with remmingtons Thanks Sam
Scully
I don't know where you got that info' Sam,but i have a Remi' 700 BDL and think it's a great piece if kit.The safety locks the bolt solid. The Remington 700 is one of the most popular and most customised rifles ever made, and one of the worlds best sellers. I'll readily admit, the 700 series is starting to show its age now,and there are much better rifles on the market these days, especially the more expensive rifles from Europe, but for the previous poster to claim Remington haven't sold one in 40 years is ridiculous! al4x
it was extracting the urine have to say I've no complaints about my SPS, though it has got an aftermarket trigger and stock on it, the beauty about them is they shoot fine from the box but you have a huge range of goodies if you do want to change anything

Scully
No typo error....the safety on earlier model 700's locks the bolt.I'm not sure when this practise was discontinued.
Scully
Last post still stands....the safety, which is on the right-hand side, locks the bolt.I'll see if I can find out when Remington decided to discontinue this .
the running man
The safety on a rem 700 does not lock the bolt and they are so rubbish for that reason that they have not managed to sell one in 40+years. i thought the 700 is the worlds best selling rifle? IMO NO gun should have a "SAFETY" catch, they DO NOT make the gun safe at all. Anything mechanical can and will at some point fail. Relying on a catch to make something like a gun safe is plain wrong.
Scully
According to 'The Remington 700 Model Rifle' by Chuck Hawks, 'it(the safety)used to lock the bolt (to prevent inadvertant opening in the field)as well as the trigger, but the former feature has been eliminated.' But it doesn't say when. Will do more research.
al4x
so does yours lock or not Scully almost got mine out of the cabinet last night to check as I confess to not knowing but will take Fisters word for it, but to the OP never had the bolt fall open yet
MC
I still don't get why you would need a safety catch to prevent the bolt opening in the field. Why would it be a worry about the bolt coming open and losing a round? There shouldn't be a round in the chamber unless you are ready to take a shot. My RPA doesn't have a safety catch that I know of. My other rifles do as do my shotguns but I never use any of them, there is no need. Scully
Yes al4x..the safety on my 700 does lock the bolt aswell as the trigger. And even though it's considered bad practise, when stalking I too carry my rifle with a round chambered, safety on,muzzle aware.

Dekers
I have the .308 700 SPS in Stainless. I bought my two Tikkas before it and had always thought they had the edge. Don't believe everything you hear, the Remington 700 series are very good, admitedly some better than others. Mine shot straight from the box no problem, I took about 2.5 inches off the barrel and fitted a P8 Compact and it handles even better. Mine has the X Mark Pro trigger which has been sensibly adjusted. I have to suggest the Tikkas still probably have better triggers, but the 700 is a fine rifle and you will hear very few complaints..... ......and how often have you ever heard of a bolt coming open in the field and losing a round? al4x
it wasn't about the bolt opening in the field it was suggested to have a mag full and leave the bolt open while stalking, I suggetsed on a sling with the rifle pointing downwards with the bolt open you could loose rounds

And a rifle being carried pointing down is unlikely to have the bolt open enough to lose rounds, what with that magical force known as gravity. al4x
so you un chamber the gun, detach the magazine to stop another round loading, leave the bolt loose and push the magazine back after every shot, give me a break and obviously most stalkers in the UK are equally dangerous in your eyes as most keep the gun loaded and safety on while stalking in, as Doc says they even teach it on the DSC its that bad. I'd suggest not going out doors or driving anywhere as that is substantially more likely to lead to an accident

I'd suggest not going out doors or driving anywhere as that is substantially more likely to lead to an accident I just believe in and was taught the highest gun safety possible, the fact you and your mates are accidents waiting to happen is not my fault. I have been taught lots of things in my life that weren;t always correct, the fact that someone tells you something doesn't make it right.
