Stealth Stalker
We had our last corporate day on a shoot I beat on today. They've been averaging good mixed bags of about 300, there's still lots of birds about though. Its our turn next week. I can't wait!! I've never been on a beaters day before, any tips would be appreciated. Cheers SS
Cranfield
Most shoots have their own rules and these will be explained to you. Relax, enjoy yourself, do what you are told and only shoot sporting birds.
Devilishdave
When you get to your peg have a look round see whare all the other guns are as well as pickers up. make a mental note of whare you wil intend to kill birds ie take a line 1/2 way between you and the guy next to you and mark it with a fence post or tree so you dont get sucked in to shooting some one elses birds. if they have both barrels at it and you recon you can take it then have a crack. but let them try first. The old keepers addage is bum belly beak bang make sure you are infront of the bird and after you have fired continue to follow the shot threw by keeping the cheek on the stock and keeping the gun swinging. the further and faster the bird the more lead it will want. Be safe. Dont shoot any low birds particularly if you shoot at one infront then follow it over it will probably start to drop and could sucker you in to taking a low shot behind whare there might be pickers up. If you do take a bird behind track it forwards. un mount the gun turn around with barrels up remount then shoot. This will prevent you accidently swinging threw the line in the heat of the moment. Just remember one dead man is not worth all the phesants in the world. The fact you are asking advice in the first place marks you out as being sensable any way so I am sure you will do just fine. Last tip dont mix alcohol with shooting thats a mugs game. Most of all enjoy your self

dunganick
also dont forget that you might need to pay beaters. i did not get told this on my boys day last year, and i certainly did not feel good about it ive unfortuantly not got a driven boys day this year (it was today and i was at school......such is life) but i have a walk around with the keeper and a few chaps this saterday, so all is not lost. enjoy your day
Devilishdave
For pheasants at this time of the year that should be flying well I would use 32g of 5s or 6s and best go for 1/4 and 1/2 chokes or there about. you can go tighter if you are very experianced and take the further an higher birds. Having said that I managed to drop a goose on Monday with 6s and 1/4 choke. Not what I would normaly use but I was not expecting to see a goose on a driven day. Worst thing was my other jacket I always have a pocket of 42g 3s!! **** law eh. Any way dont worey to much about the carts or chokes if you are on and have the bird in the centre of the patern at a reasonable range it will go down no problem. MC
Most important, absolutely NO swinging through the line. A friend of mine was shot in the face at a beaters day on saturday by someone swinging through the line and shooting a low bird. he was hit by a few pellets just under his eye. He is OK but not something you would want to experience. But most important relax and enjoy yourself. Cheers MC
nbd1
Often on beaters day there will be a whip round for the game keeper £10 normally does it, But most important just enjoy yourself. Neil

scolopax
Well above all be safe. Cannot be said enough. As for only shooting sporting birds, well the 'keeper might very well want the cock bods hitting hard, so that means shooting whatever you can safely. If you let a succession of 20 yarders past whilst waiting for a 40 yarder you may find the keeper not too pleased. Each shoot is different of course but I have found most keepers want as many cock pheasants shooting as possible. That after all is the reason the the end of season cocks only day. I've taken a weeks holiday for my end of season days and I've got five of them , but they are all on Saturday
wacker
I had my first beaters day last Sat and totally enjoyed it, i got a left & right and two singles (cock Phesants) on one drive. Choke wise, i wouldn't worry about it too much. I had IC & 1/4 and was using 30g of no 6 shot. Enjoy yourself, it will go quick, believe me!!
