Billy.
Whilst walking the dog, he managed to pinch a lump of bread which an angler had behind him. Apparently it had a small hook in the bread (I used to hook them in lumps of bread, so I know what he means!) Sadly, in true labrador fashion, the bread was gone in milliseconds. Any advice, apart from giving him loads of food. (Vet said to do so)
Egg
Jeez... fingers crossed for him mate. My folk's golden retriever did the same once but it must have passed through him as he had no ill effects but... well, you never know. jasons gold
mine eats socks and alsorts and it always comes out, either one way or another usually a couple of days later so i would'nt worry too much
Andy75
I'd be pretty damned worried about a fishook Did the vet not want to go in and have it out?

I'd be pretty damned worried about a fishook Did the vet not want to go in and have it out? Apparently it's quite common. It was just over the phone advice. J@mes
My advice would be to not leave him on his own until you know it is out - once it starts moving it could get caught in the gut, and as soon as that happens (god forbid) you would need to know about it and get him to the vets. al4x
yup hope you've got the rubber gloves ready, all its got to do is perforate the gut and it gets rather serious
Dunkield
The size of the hook would be a consideration, did he mention a number? they vary massively...
al4x
wouldn't it be odd also to just have a hook in it with no line attached? be pretty difficult to tie the hook on once baited
Billy.
The size of the hook would be a consideration, did he mention a number? they vary massively... It was just a little one. Not like a 5, or I would be worried. More like 10 - 14. (I used to fish a long time ago so my sizes are probably wrong, as I was recalling from a distant memory of hook sizes.) Dunkield
The higher the number in theory at least the less there is to worry about.
Cranfield
The higher the number in theory at least the less there is to worry about. That chart looks to be about one or two clicks too big. I have always fed my dog rice when they have eaten/swallowed something I am not happy with. Fortunately, there have never been any ongoing problems and I am sure (and hope) that all will be well in the case of your dog.

nobby63
On a good note most hooks rot very quickly if it does lodge anywere and been inside the dog hopefully this will speed up the process as others have said shame you didnt identify the brand as waiting for it to pass is going to take a very close examination. If its not chipped a metal detector will come in handy

Newt
I wouldn't worry over much about the hook, stomach acid will blunt it if not dissolve it if it's there any length of time. If you have the stomach to look for it then I would for peace of mind, but what would concern me more would be the line attached. String or line in the gut will interfere with the action of the gut, and if it's long enough to link a few turns in the gut together, can damage it. Keep an eye on him. berties
We had a lab who swallowed a barbed fish hook on the beach which sparked off a keep beach clean campaign, she had a emergency op which the vet was wanting us to go to a vet school specialist, she was ok after op,but if you try to let your dog pass it what damage could be done on the way through?good luck mate,it's a tuff one maybe a xray could be a call
