Mrs Sweepy
What are you lot like flying fun. Its the food they dished up that scares me. Last time I was on the plane I forgot too lock the loo door. Boy was that a long walk back too my seat . I had too keep telling myself I would never see these people again so it did not matter what they saw .
Guest CraigBenson
Marker Beacons? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marker_beacon You get a different audio tone (not a klick) depending on the beacon that your over, outer, middle or inner/airway. I don't know of anything that I have come accross that makes a fast ticking on the flight deck at any point in the flight. Might be that I haven't come accross it, but no avionic system springs to mind at the moment.

Grandalf
That loud clicking noise is a small electronic gizmo that tots up the total of the pilots expenses.

But then it sounds like you guys have a just a few more hours than me I'm avionics by trade and had 20 years, about 6 on TriStar. Not a clue about the ticking. My wife hates to fly, I love it. I have to give her an explanation for every noise and she won't use the toilet incase it crashes and she's found with her pants down. Grandalf
I can't think of anything that sounds like that in any cockpit I have flown. Marker beacons have almost become redundant since co-located ILS/DME's became the norm. (Instrument landing system/Distance measuring equipment). I wait to see the video clip with interest Kyska. flyingfisherman
kyska, its the elevator trim.. it reduced control forces on the yoke/stick. Due to changes in speed and configuration, you hear the clicking more on approach and landing.. I liked grandalfs reply about pilot expenses! I want to work for that company!! Grandalf
Flyingfisherman, you could be right at that. Didn't think of the trim - but it is not rhythmical, very intermittant on most approaches that I ever flew! The heavy expenses thing was in the good old days - Didn't get paid much when you weren't flying though. At one time you could even qualify for overseas tax rates if you were on long-haul flights. Nostalgia...

The trims on some jets are a 3 click rhythmical noise from my experience, especially if flown on A/P. Obviously if the pink squidgy thing is flying it, then the trimmer moves in a more erratic way! in my experience anyways.. FFM
Grandalf
FF - The trouble with being in flying 20 years earlier is it makes you 20 years older! I enjoyed my time at it. Army Air Corps, fixed wing of course, then just about everything I could get my hands on. Six redundancies in the 70's and 80's and retired 6 years ago at 65. I think I had some of the best years. If navigators didn't have a clue where the aircraft was, at least they could make a good cup of tea. Not so many regulations and paperwork either! DSPUK
Grandalf - so you was the pilot of my first ever flight - poo scared didn't come close - finally got to within 30 miles of Chicago and suddenly the engines stopped - dead silence - we was gliding no wonder I was scared -- No one told me it was normal to power back and glide the rest of the way -- thanks mate for some sticky kecks. dave

Sprackles
Dont know what you are all worried about....Flying isn't dangerous..........its crashing thats the problem. Grandalf.....I enjoy my flying but wish I had taken the commercial route, still I suppose i do have the option of going where I want when I want and if I want to do a loop I can. Dont think KLM would have been too impressed with you if you tried that.. Hmmm....wonder if I can trade some flying for shooting..... hamster123
im no lover of flying it spoiles my holiday with the thought of getting there by plane and then when i get to my destiation all i can think of is the flight back. i must admit i do tend to watch them seconds from disaster docs on sky. Laird Lugton
Flying is inherently safe, I've got 7,500hrs on medium sized jets and am a natural coward so if I'm not happy no one is going anywhere! Just to give you the cosey warm feeling, most comercial aircraft now prety mugh fly themselvs and land under the control of the auto pilot, and can drive to the gate as long as the airport is set up for it. The pilots monitor the radios, adjust some settings for the auto pilot, and play scrabble. Which aircraft are these that can drive to the gate? The Boeings & Airbuses I've flown can't do this or maybe I've yet to find the switch! Most aircraft I've known can't take off automatically, but will fly and can land on autopilot. Like Grandalf I've yet to play scrabble! I watch pilots landing and doing stuff on you tube, can someone tell me what the loud fast clicking sound is in the cockpit? heard on approach it seems, and before taking off. Are you sure it's not the Autopilot being disconnected? Most folk take the autopilot out for landing. Grandalf, not sure if you were KLM or KLMuk but I may have dispatched you if you ever flew the F27, F50, F100 or BAe146? Raja Clavata
There are at least 2 doing the same thing and looking at each other all the time. Any faults it will flag them up and may revert to a basic function if it's a biger fault. At worst the pilots have to fly manualy. Surely by definition that's OK for anything that is not required to be "high availability" but anything "safety / mission critical" or "high dependency / availability" requires triple lane redundancy? roadkill
flying is very safe , i deal with over 50 aircraft mvts a night and not had any fall out of the sky yet only one that was hit by another plane which was human error lol Been on many fligths at the cockpit end and its so much fun as you get to see it all happen . Never heard any clicking
Pastiebap
I never used to have a problem with flying, but the last time I flew, for some strange reason I felt really uncomfortable the whole flight and was bloody glad to get off the aircraft. I far prefered flying with Crab Air opposed to commercial airlines.
