JonD
Hi All, I have just listed a few bits and bobs on eBay for the first time. Currently have a couple of items that have a bid at the 99p starting bid but 5, 6 and 7 watchers on different listings, is this a good thing for a fight at the end or something else? The auctions have a good few days to run. Any selling advice? Cheers, Jon.

The Pest Expert
Just says how many people may be intrested, and haved looked at your item and clicked the watch button and it will email them when your item is nearly ending and then if they wont it they just log on and will find it in there my ebay part. Hope this helps atb-Jorge

Make thing finish on Sunday about 7pm, think that was the most popular time for people to go on there, up for an last minute bargain impulse buy. HW682
As a general rule, more watchers is a good thing. However, I have sold a few things and sometimes you get plenty of watchers and no bid and sometimes no watchers but do get a bid. If it is your first time, then don't be surprised if you get no bids until the last few seconds. Good luck edit: lol a few others beat me to it. Also forgot to add, at the moment ebay seem to be offering free listing days every other weekend or so. If you wait for one of them to sell any more bits, you can list at a higher starting price for free. Don't know what you are selling, but it might be of interest to know. utectok
I'd say about 1/3 to 1/4 of watchers bid roughly! Edited November 4, 2010 by utectok

955i
Also remember that they will be watching all the other items the same as yours.
peck
what you have to watch on ebay is that if no one else bids the item will sell for the 99p. what you have to do is set a reserve or starting price at the very lowest you would sell the item for. on buying i always wait to the last minute and then place the highest price i would be prepared to buy it for, if i dont win the auction then someone is prepared to pay more for it than me. good luck with your items. Billy.
I've seen people actually updating viewers on how many watchers the item has, by editing the item description. Especially if it's a collectable item. Edited November 4, 2010 by Billy.

I have done that once or twice if i want the item to sell quickly and hope someone emails with an offer to end...I know its wrong to do but its just quicker and saves on fees as dont agree with the fact that you cant leave neg feedback for a buyer Edited November 4, 2010 by leeds chimp

Especially if it's a collectable item. Been there done that., nothing to stop you doing that...and it increases poss buyers interest... I just sold an Abu rod tonight, up till about 5 mins before the end, it was at £7 odd, it sold in the last few mins/secs for almost over £45.... I'm sorry, but at what point did eBay think that a buyer would not do something wrong?! So if I sell something and the person mucks me around and fails to pay, I leave him a positive feedback with a slating in the message

The scammer did me a favour actually... Edited November 4, 2010 by Norrie

pegasus bridge
a lot of bids that are put in at the last minute are from ebay 'sniping' tools - goofbay.com is a good one - you can preset a bid amount and time that the bid will be entered. ebay co-operate fully with these companies - as it was explained to me by an ebay powerseller - the sites have a direct 'backdoor' route onto the ebay systems - all legitimate though - but i do think it can undermine the point of an auction. i starting using ebay snipers after i got outbid with a couple of seconds to go - as they say - if you cant beat them - join them! BaconBoy
Tried to sell a car twice on there,1st time 23 watchers,no bids,2nd time 17 watchers no bids.i had a low starting price,no reserve and still didn't get a bid. put it back on for a third time, after about a day i pulled it off as an old mate i hadn't seen for about 8 years that lived 5 minutes away had seen it on there and we done a good deal on it.everybody came away happy. I now use a 'sniping tool' First work out what you think your maxiumum bid should be, then set max bid in sniper and your bid goes in in the last 3 seconds! I've won quite a few this way. And you dont get Auction fever where you bid because you want it, and end up paying too much. Paladin
JonD
Thanks all, Most have bids on them with a few days to go, nothing exciting but hopefully tey bid their hearts out lol. Seems this weekend is a free listing weekend so will list a load more. The postage pricing annoys me, i can only charge £1 for a box set that will cost me well over £2 to post
JonD
Well, it appears the watchers wanted the stuff First autions finished last night, all but 1 item paid for I'm surprised that they made what they did, just a load of stuff I had lying around turned into 1000 carts More to go tonight Jon. Dunkield
I thought you could set the postage to be whatever you wanted? You will hear many stories about old rubbish selling on eBay Jon, and lots of it is true I don't sell that much stuff on there but I always get what I want for it, I would time your sales to end about 8pm on a weekday, but not on Monday. They say any IT stuff sells best during the day as most potential buyers are sat on eBay at work. I had an S&B scope on there that had 27 watchers, but my timed finish was bang in the middle of an England football match, so the winning bid was actually placed days before the end - having said that it sold well but I was expecting a feeding frenzy in the last few minutes. Paddy Galore!
Most watchers on e bay are only window shopping, sold a few bikes on there in the past, the most recent was a Z650 with over 100 watchers, only 1 bid tho. the most memorable was an old R75 ex police bike, had about 70 watchers and only 2 people trying to out bid each other, went for £750 in the end.
