Old Ill JR

My dear old nan has a 15 year old JRT that has been snappy and horrible and stinky for the last year, but has recently started peeing in the house and yelping when getting up. She can't be taken to the vets as you can just about stroke her so picking her up is out of the question as is letting the poor old thing be dragged around in a car etc. I don't want to put the poor old thing through it.

The JRT is still eating and drinking and pottering about, but is clearly in pain some of the time. The mere suggestion of PTS sends my old nan flying off the handle, you would think we were suggesting HER for a trip to Dignitas, its the same result.

My question is, where can I buy Rimadyl, Vetergesic etc online and what dose should I use on an old dog that won't need her kidneys or liver for much longer. I just want to make her last few months as comfortable as I can without killing her outright (the JRT that is)!

Thanks in advance.

you'll need a prescription for rimadyl certainly but if you do have one let me know and I may be able to help. Sadly it sounds like you need a proper chat with your nan and possibly get the vet to talk to her as well as it sounds like there is something seriously wrong and the dog must be in pain which isn't on.

Thats the problem, Iv'e no means of getting a perscription as the dog just isn't going to get to a vets. I have found a few places that sell the drug, http://www.viovet.co.uk/p6/Are_you_looking_to_buy_Rimadyl/pages.html at 40p a tab seems fair to help the old thing out.

I had some left from when my lab sprained her elbow and shes had thoese broken up last week which helped her getting up and down, especially getting up after being asleep. Its doesn't seem to be constant pain and theres problem moving around, although she has stopped going up the stairs now. I know its not long before the dog needs putting down, and if it was my call it would be very soon.

Theres no chance of changing my nans mind, literally none, even though I know full well its the best thing to do in the very near future. The circumstances arn't ideal but if I can just ease the pain in the meantime that will be something.

the dog needs help

help it regardless of what your gran says...its not fair to leave a dog suffering

her emotional pain will end and it will be nothing compared to the dogs pain

Don't need an ethics lecture thanks. I have made it clear what I feel and what the situation dictates I have to do several times. As mentioned above more than once there is no way I can change the mind of a 70 year old ex publican whos had the dog in her life for 15 years. Yes it will shortly need putting down, no its not going to happen.

I have asked for advice on how to source painkillers off ticket for an old dog.

How do you suggest I go about stopping the dogs suffering.... steal it? rock up with 32g #6 and get down to buisness?

Please don't preach ethics to me, your just mugging your self off.

so we just leave animals to suffer because someone will get upset when it goes. :hmm:

i would rather someone dislike me for a while and do the right thing

you may well get some painkillers and 'ease the pain' but the dog is still suffering..

i dont know what planet your on but on this one we call earth..no animal should suffer for any reason

sorry you think i am giving you an ethics lesson, i just have an opinion and strongly believe it is wrong to let any animal, pet or wild suffer for no reaso

you won't get rimadyl etc without a prescription online its a POM so unless you can find someone who has an old supply etc you'll be very lucky to find a source. Sometimes in this kind of situation with stubborn old people relatives tip the RSPCA off and they pop round and in the nicest way say a vet needs to see it and go from there. Keeps you out of it and the right thing gets done by the dog

Drop the shooting forum "we all love animals and their feelings" bs. I would not want to jepodise the good relation ship I have with one of the last elderly relatives I have for the sake a dog. Again, NO it will not see a PTS anytime soon. YES I can give it pain meds, so with my huge powers of deduction I think I will do the latter!

You say there is no reason for me letting the animal suffer, again I wish to ease its suffering not prolong it. And the reason is because last time I checked you cannot take an animal away from somone against there will and have it put down because its a bit sore round its back end and feels a bit stiff in the morning! Clear?

Again any advice on where to source vet grade painkillers online, ideally a site that you have dealt with prior? Thanks

there isn't a site without a prescription for prescription only medecines, they won't do it as they would get their license to operate removed for selling them.

If its only sore round the back end in the morning take it to a vet for her and get it prescribed rimadyl or metacam if its gone incontinent as well then the time is really up and its not doing it any favours

You might want to try Metacam though-far less side effects than Rimadyl and you can gradually reduce the dosage when pain relief is under control. Its a liquid, dosage is by bodyweight and all you do is syringe it in its food or directly in the mouth. My old Rottie developed arthritis and i saw a big improvement in his mobility within 3 days of being on Metacam.

Ask the vet to do a home visit. Some practices do this and if yours dont-ask another.

You are either extremely naive or you are looking for a board member to supply you with the drug.

For Christ sake man get your vet round to see the dog, there is NO excuse for you not to do this.

A quick Google search has just given me foreign suppliers who would be quite happy to supply a UK address without a script. However That was not what you were after, what you wanted was for a board member to bend the rules, condone your cruelty and send you the drug.

Get a grip chap and call your VET, no excuses..............do it now.

the issue is its not his dog but an elderly relatives, whichever way they are causing unnecessary suffering so if a trip to the vets can't be done because the relative won't allow it then there is only one option and that is getting someone else impartial to talk to her and make her do the right thing. I suspect though this will all go quiet and nothing will happen

I have only just seen this thread.

Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 you have a duty of care for animals in your charge. Your relative is breaking the law by allowing the dog to suffer unnecessarily. I have no sympathy for people like that, nor for people who try and obtain drugs illegally. You are just as bad sitting there and doing nothing about it.

Chances are things could be done for the old dog, to at the very least improve it's quality of life. There is a good chance the dog is grumpy from the insufferable pain it is in. Getting it to a vet is the best option in the long run, even if the trip is difficult.

Just a warning that drugs you buy from abroad without prescription could often be counterfeit, or contain harmful substances, even if advertised as the same. You are also breaking the law by importing drugs without a prescription.
