steve_b_wales
I'm looking for a 235 / 65 / R17 AT tyres for my Freelander2. I use the vehicle 85% onroad, and my 'offroading' consists of driving up dirt/gravel tracks, and the occasional fields that are wet, but not too muddy. I've got Kuhmo tyres in the front (Road Ventura AT) and they seem okay, but I cannot get any more until next March. (I've put an ad' on here to see if I can get some ) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Steve.
Billy.
Well I give full thumbs up for the BFG's I've just put on the motor. Although I'm not sure of your budget. Best to go over budget and sell the old tyres to subsidise the price
al4x
Have a look at the Toyo open country, they are a similar spec to your Kuhmo's not severe off road but an all terrain orientated road tyre http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m56b0s251p58969
PhilR
Hi Steve, This is a useful website for selecting tyres dependent upon your use of them: http://www.4site4x4.co.uk/4x4-tyres.aspx Then it is a matter of trawling the websites to see what is in stock: http://www.camskill.co.uk/index.php http://www.valuetyres.co.uk/?utm_source=Google%2BAds&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=Adwords&gclid=CI7nzaqJvqUCFQFO4QoddyOgXQ http://www.tyrepriceadvisor.co.uk/ http://www.event-tyres.co.uk/ http://www.blackcircles.com/ This is an interesting site if you want to change tyre/wheels sizes as you can see the visual difference and it also shows you what happens to your speed in comparison to the speedo when the gearing is altered. http://www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/visual-tyre-size-calculator I hope this helps. The advert states out of stock, so I will check with local dealer. I just need a tyre that won't be too loud onroad (my main driving) but will provide grip on gravel, mud etc, but not to the extreme. al4x
I have to say my general grabbers are no louder than standard but they are like hens teeth I had the toyos for a while on my last truck and they would fit your requirements well

magman
Had some AT2's fitted 4 months ago never been in 4WD since , no road noise unlike the BFG's hatted them . If you can get the AT2's go for it
steve_b_wales
The most stupid thing about all this is the ridiculous tyre/rim size Landrover decided to fit on the Freelander2. There are loads of good AT/MT tyres on the market with some reasonably priced, but as soon as I mention or enter online, the size I require, they are not available. luvbus
Have you looked at sizes similar to the standard fit that are more available ie 255/65 17? If you do a search or two on on the Freelanderc 2 forum you will get an idea of the sizes that can be fitted:- http://www.freel2.com/forum/index.php

Conygree
One way Steve is to keep the road tyres on the std rims and buy a set of x4 16"steel wheels with A/T's that have the same outside Diameter but may be a bit wider, normally not a problem - with 16" rims with larger section tyres they give a softer ride off road anyway( I could look some up if you like). I had AT2 on my L200 but did a trade swop for a set of BFG A/T's much quieter, and I have(ok given) set of 10.5-31 x15's M/T muddy use on the L200. Or buy a set of 'Brindley snowchains' which are even better than M/T's in the mud, for the odd snow/mud trip - I have x3 set of chains ( I also have a winch on the back but normaly when stuck I use the snowchains - how may times is there a handy tree to winch me out - I mainly use the 8,000lb winch for trees)
Conygree
Being a landrover wheel someting like a 235/85 x 16 on steel/alloy rims from on of the many landy wheel suppliers should do the trick, They should give the same outside diameter. I'm sure it's common problem wher you can get advised Steve. So you keep your road wheels for most of the year and use the A/T or M/T (more road noise) for mud/snow. Hope this helps

It's an option that I'll keep open if I don't have any luck. I've just sourced some Goodyear Wrangler tyres, which are the original ones fitted to my Freelander. I can get them online from Kwik -Fit for a total of £270 (for two) My only worry is, I pay in advance to get this price, and they will source them for me.But I have been told by 3 tyre dealers, that this make of tyre is on back order, and will probably take months before they can get them. What if I pay, and Kwik -Fit can't get them by the date I choose to have them fitted? Will I get a refund?
Conygree
Steve once life was simple just drive in and ask for new tyres - don't know the answer to that one. try and see what a set of x4 16"steels with A/T's on from somewhere like '4x4 silverline tyres/wheels' would be (explain the problem). looks like winter is coming. You're right! I've spent the last 7-10 days trying to get a tyre dealer to get me some tyres. The problem was compounded because I've been working night shifts as well. One local tyre dealer phoned up and said that he had another set of Kuhmo's for me. My wife took the car down, had the tyres fitted, only for me to find that they had put road tyres on! Back down I went, had the road ones taken off, and my original ones put back on! To say that I'm at my wit's end, is an understatement. Conygree
Hi Steve, just had time for a look - your 235/75 -17" are 784mm outside dia. So if you can't buy any, you could fit 245/75-16" 775mm outside dia on a set of 16"dia -7" wide rims You may find a set of 16" 7" Freelander alloy rims from a specialist land rover breaker. Going up only one size shouldn't make any difference to width clearance, I went up from 205/75 -14" to 235/75 15" on my old 4x2 ranger which is the size for the 4x4 ranger. ( my earlier bit was a mistake for 235/85 16 = they are LT landrover only) hope it helps and doesn't add to your headache Just had a look on Camskill no stock on 235/75 17 but most types are in stock for 245/75-16" but there could be a snag? I looked on one landrover forun and they say you can fit new type wheels to an older freelander but not the other way around - bits foul. al4x
stupid question but would these fit http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4-x-Freelander-16-alloys-BFG-ATs-nearly-new-/320630287552?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Rims_Car_Wheels_ET&hash=item4aa70decc0#ht_500wt_1156 with a 4.2% difference in rolling radius to your standard tyres they would actually be fine and just cause the speedo to slightly under read Edited December 14, 2010 by al4x
steve_b_wales
Well, I finally purchased two tyres for my Freelander2. After two weeks of trying to get something suitable, and being told by numerous dealers that 'they are on back order' etc etc, I contacted blackcircles.com (my thanks to philr for the link) I asked for, and was told they were in stock, two general Grabber UHP's. I know they are not 'offroad' tyres, but my offroading consists of dirt/gravel tracks and 'not so muddy' fields. I'm expecting them on Thursday, and hope I made the right decision. My thanks to all that took the time to try and help me get this issue sorted. Steve.
