Not sure if he has organised them in the past, he organises fox drives and dray bashing, and invites beaters on keepers day as a thankyou.. His main tool of use is rifle for fox control, and lets others do pigeon, and crow bashing. He is a p/t keeper for the shoot owner who is always out with the shottie..

I think that some guys near me are around the 20 to 1 with the amount of shots i hear then when i ask how they did they say 4 or 5 .

Key is not to rush your self in to taking the birds to early . I shot 12 times in my wood last year best average was 2 to 1 on a windy evening and worst was 5 to 1 on a night with little to no wind

As a newby shotgunner but a life long rifleman (air and powder) with an ingrained 1 shot 1 clean kill policy and a 90 (high) odd percent clean kill record, I always found it hard to accept even 50/50 hit and miss rate.

I'll have to adjust I guess :hmm:

Round my area in feb we have a pigeon shoot every Saturday that starts at 2pm until dusk. The beaters get to choose the woods there in by the amount of times and years they have been beating. so some1 that has been beating for 20 years say gets first choice of a wood. I think this happens all through lancs. Was just wondering if this happens all over the country . I was board so though I'd start a topic ! This has happend for many years on my estate sinse I can remember any way. Aparantly 30 years ago the sky was black with pigeon and ure barrels would get red hot !

Hi all

Nice to see its happening elswere.

It has been common in East Yorkshire to do the woods on Fridays, I am sure it also went into the first two weeks in march when I had my first experience with shotgun use back in 1963.

This being a reward for the beaters if you could skive off school and bike to the keepers (Charlie Altoft) house at Eske, from there being loaned a side by side twelve with one usable barrel (tuther being twisted)

Very fond memories

Thank's Charlie, rest in piece.

I now have the luck of another benefactor who allows me and my son to station our selves in the woods to control and harvest these tasty delights, as I am comming on 65 it's nice to get in a warm wood with a fallen branch to sit on and plug away at the varied and testing shots presented without having to lug mountains of kit on the off chance of deeking birds in.

I am getting as exited as an old bu**er can get in anticipation of the sport to come,

I hope you all have a great February and please try and introduce some one new to the game, it helps when we have numbers to speek when things are not going well for us normal people

Just introduced my 8 year old son to the delights of roost shooting.

Had a couple of hours in a wood on a friend's farm, not much wind so the birds were high and wary but I think he enjoyed it.

We managed a couple of woodies, but being an 8 year old, he couldn't keep still for long! He was desparate to shoot one though so I think I have enticed him enough to come again.

For several years now we've had a Pigeon Watch National Day for Grey Squirrel and Wood Pigeon.

It held on the second Saturday in February.

The general format is for groups to meet up in the woods around noon and then break up unto smaller groups of two or three guns and then search the woods for, GREY Squirrels. Correctly identified dreys can be shot out, but only in woods where there are NO REDS.

After a couple of hours or so guns move on to their roost shooting positions to shoot the woodies.

By having a concentrated effort the flocks of woodies are kept on the move for as long as possible and moved on from wood to wood, and the efforts of neighbouring estates and shoots benefit each other.

Please remember to record your kills on the PW running count threads for GREY Squirrels and Wood Pigeon.
