bi9johnny
hey folks if you do stumble across the cache's please don't mess them up as they are in a place where people can get to legaly they are never done where people are not meant to be ....it is a cool hobby and keeps the kids off the street...the idea is to recover the cache without being seen by muglers (non cache folks) fill out the paper maybe give something and return it in situ without notice...you will be surprised just how close they are to you right now lololol
agjm
I cannot remember the name of it but I am sure there is an old version of this (or something similar) on Dartmoor. What your thinking about is letterboxing. We spent a couple of weeks in the brecons last year and I downloaded quite a few caches to my gps as they are a quick way to to find a decent walk. They give the walk a bit of an added purpose too.
garyb
You only have to read some of the "comments" on the website to see that people looking for these things regularly stray off the path and through fields where they shouldn't be.. I remember one of the comments regarding one of the local ones here, Where by the Geofool was chased by "the farmer, as we ran through his corn (wheat?) field" I've got no problem with it, but I don't agree with the increased foot and tyre traffic in areas of natural beauty... Why can't it be saved for area's of already high public activity such as national parks etc? Edited January 20, 2011 by garyb
al4x
Its fine if they are on public rights of way but having all and sundry walking all over the place on their sad little treasure hunts does cause problems especially if they do so at night. After all if you relocate to the local waste disposal device you just keep them looking a little longer
Mungler
Do Geocachers have a secret code or handshake. I see that have developed their own language based on Harry Potter if I'm not mistaken. Back in the old days the best you could hope to happen upon was a cash of porn mags. Beardo
geodogging - i see a future in that. for all my cynicism i actually think it's a good way of getting the kids out and about (caching not dogging), as long as they keep to public rights of way. Though i have issues with the Harry Potter terminology
Zapp
Back in the old days the best you could hope to happen upon was a cash of porn mags. Ahh, the tattered, rain damaged copy of Razzle stuffed in a hedge or lying in a ditch, jumpers for goalposts etc etc. Yet another thing the internet has ruined. Or made loads better. UKPoacher
Wow, what a catchy title "Geocaching". It conjures up in the mind Matrix crossed with Hackers. Oh yeah, expectations were high when I clicked into this thread. But then I delved in and discovered that I had found the most pointless thing ever; my first thought was to get onto the Guiness Book of records. I would mention "Geocaching" to my kids, but I fear that if they repeated it at school they would get picked on Yep! Me too. I've checked those on my permission though. Just to make sure they are not on private land. Edited January 20, 2011 by UKPoacher

MC
Anybody into this? Went out with Peeown for a few hours last week, and then when we got bacj to the car, nature called. I trotted off into the bushes, and on the way back, i noticed a small DPM styled bag tucked into a tree branch. I took it back to the car, and even before we opened it, we both though the same thing, DRUGS Upon inspection, i turned out to be a tub, with a letter explainging about geocaching, and all manner of little trinkets inside. The instructions said please feel free to take something and leave something in return. We filled in the small guest book, and didnt take anything, but we left them a spent Eley Impax No 6 , and signed the log @The Hunters' (should have been blankers ) Mart, Were you disapointed when it wasn't drugs?
Ainsley
Lol, at a local woods near to me (Hanchurch) there was a woman who walked her dogs there every day who found a series of arrows painted on seemingly random trees. Over the next few weeks whilst walking she searched and searched, convinced that the arrows were painted on by trappers leading to badger setts. She got the police involved and convinced them to put up a camera by all accounts. After a few weeks investigation they actually came across a massive hidden cannabis stash buried in the ground that was being used as a drop off/supply point. Geoporn and geodrugs.com. Coming to a woodland near you soon Edited January 20, 2011 by Ainsley

njc110381
So what's the point in this then? You hide some stuff, post it on a website so others can go looking for it and when they find it they take some stuff out and replace it with something decent that they have? I don't get it - it sounds like the freebies cupboard at the local backpackers hostel but without a purpose?! I guess it's better for the kids than a playstation. I may see if there are any on my shoots and check them out if there are. I'm certainly not aimlessly wandering about places I have no business being to find one though!
