constant headaches is semi way to go?

While out on driven game shoots iam fine with my over and under beretta using 30gram shells as i dont fire that many. However when it comes th pigeon shooting even with 28gram shells i find iam getting terrible migrane afterwards.

Its been that bad im either going to have to pack it in or find a solution.I know that semis have less felt recoil so im thinking thats the way to go but im worried my shooting will suffer as its a different gun.

So my question is,is shooting a semi alot different to an over and under?will i get on with it.i dont want to spend the money then find i cant hit a thing.

im thinking beretta urika field.guage

I've shot my shooting buds semi, and to be honest I couldn't feel the difference really, more of a 'softer' recoil really.

I'd go and see a physio or chiro to be honest mate, you might just have a weak muscle somewhere.

Do you protect you ears too?

Providing your Beretta fits you well and you haven't got any bad mounting habits, then i would say a semi auto would help alot.

I used to use a semi when i did alot of pigeon shooting for that very reason. I even started to have to use one when i shot aloy of clays... same as you very bad headaches.

A beretta is a good one to chose ... though you won't be very welcome at a game shoot with it !

See if you can try one out .... i think you'll like it !

i think my gun mount is ok and the gun fits me fine although maybe 1/4 inch too long in the stock but i dont know that for sure.I wear ear protection every time i shoot.

Its same headache i get when im dehydrated it starts in my right temple and then goes down my neck.im no wuss but i just cant take it anymore.the day after it feels like a hangover.

i know that the beretta has shims to adjust so it will fit.I think ill give it a go and keep the over and under for driven days. :good:

I found using a semi 22LR rifle that I sometimes got a headache, I think its the ingestion of powder gasses from the action. I assume you are not a LH shot shooting a RH gun and the cart is ejecting accross your face. I would try a different brand of cartridge, otherwise just use the O/U.

I had a shoulder injury this year and having a semi allowed me to carry on shooting.

Can be advantageous for a couple of reasons when pigeon shooting as you will have less gun movement to load it - just keep feeding it from the bottom and no breaking the gun. plus less recoil.

If you have shoulder, back or neck problems it could easily manifest itselfs in migraine headaches so could well be the recoil.

I had never shot a semi before last summer and was really pleased as kept me shooting comfortably whilst my shoulder repaired itself.

Have you had your eyes tested recently :hmm: ,maybe you could try some shades i know it helps me as i always get a headache shooting pigeons, but never when out with the rifle or shooting rabbits,so i just put it down to looking at the sky and since a started wearing sunglasses it has helped, also the angle of your neck whilst constantly looking up may have something to do with it and maybe needs to be tortured by the bone cruncher

I had a heart attack a couple of years ago and found that with taking asprin every day I bruise easily, a day in the pigeon hide was no pleasure at all!

I ended up buying a semi auto and have never looked back. Early on this last season I got an invitation to a shoot, I was going to cry off but spoke to the keeper who said "bring whatever you shoot with", I did and nobody said a word.

Go for it!

I have carried a neck and back injury for many years and over the past 3years was having a real problem with recoilfrom constant use of a 12 bore over and under . Shooting several shots at pigeons was giving me a really bad head and neck ache . It was getting so bad that I thought I would have to give up shooting .

I talked to a local gun shop owner about this problem and he adviced me to try out a beretta self loader with the recoil suppression device fitted in the stock . To cut a long story short I bought a beretta urika 2 and have not looked back since . I can shoot the gun all day long and not suffer any head ache or back pain what so ever . The gun is as about recoiless as a gun can be and is without a doubt the smoothest gun I have ever shot in my life . Not the cheapest self loader on the market ,but proberbly the best .

I cant use an O/U due to back problems so i started with a browning gold, it helped but still gave me grief one a big pigeon day, i changed it to a beretta urika 2 with kick off and i can put a 250 brick though and still want more next day.

I was given a day on the pheasants but, like the above, i was going to cry it off as i was worried about taking the auto with my. keeper was fine and said no problems at all. i then had a beaters day and was picking up so i put the sling on the U2 and carried it around for the odd bird that came back over use. keeper was happy but yes i had a few looks as i was the only one carrying a gun from the start but it was over shoulder and i was using it on 6 drives so left case in truck.

Beretta Urika 2 with kick off in plastic as it dont mark when your in the hide. :good::good:

Do you only get migraines when shooting and at no other times?

If so it seems that something you do is a trigger (no pun intended). There are some possibilities suggested already. I can get a migraine from over concentration particularly if using binoculars or telescopic sights but clearly with a shottie there is not this and only open sights but their is still a concentration with constant scouring of the skies.

It could be muscular as suggested and it could also be pressure on a vein or similar feeding up through your neck and shoulder. They do believe an interuption in bloodflow can trigger an attack. Is the gun constantly resting in one place on or around your neck?

Is your clothing loose and does it allow free movement without dragging on the shoulder and neck area? I take it you have no bag or cartridge belt slung around your shoulders?

Sounds more like a trapped nerve to me - I had similar when I first started shooting my rimmie. Then I got hi lift scope mounts which made things more comfortable and less scrunched up around the neck and shoulder.

Sounds like a visit to a chiro would be advisable and a re-look at how you're mounting and holding the gun.

I sympathise and hope this is sorted soon for you.

Cheers

you wont be aloud to use a semi on a driven shoot or a clays course there mate, also they are normally unballenced and you just have to get use to them, its not like a nice o/u which is well balanced, if your not wearing ear muffs / plugs do and even better if its that bad, wear both, lastly get the gun fit checked, this could be the problem were your cheek is jumping off the stock! best of luck but if you have a o/u i wouldnt sell it for semi, get a semi as well as just incase! :good:

Most game shoots will frown on a semi... but check first with the keeper, as some will allow it if they know you to be safe and responsible...

No problem at clay shoots, very common sight and well accepted...

I can only speak about Beretta semi-auto's, but they balance and handle very well... the sight picture/feel may be different to what you are used to, but it only needs a bit of practice.

Might be referred pain from your neck (I used to have something similar) I would seriously consider going to see a chiropractor/osteopath/physio for an inspection. They should be able to see if anything is misaligned, or whether there are muscle imbalances. Gun mount is still worth a look as well, I thought mine was pretty good until I went to a good coach and gun smith, who made some corrections. Shooting has been a lot more comfortable since then and my scores have improved!

Hope it clears up.
