Electronic Ear Defenders

I have a couple of mates who use the Peltor ones which apparently are very good, but cost a few quid. The only issue is that one of them is so sensitive to 'people talking' behind him (generally when a stand isn't going too well <_< ) he can of course hear a pin drop unless he turns them off.

Great for instructors or in the field though. Or indeed if an audience helps your concentration, as it does mine.

I used a set of Bisley defenders for a good few years but swapped to the Peltor ones last year. The Bisley were fine, cheaper than the Peltor ones, but I think this is reflected in the build quality. I personally found the Bisley suffer a bit more from interference from mobile phones, always a joy on a stand (but you can turn them off of course)...

I'd recommend either depending on your budget (there are loads of both on e-bay at varying prices).

I've got a pair of these:

They're light enough, comfortable enough and slim enough that I don't have any issues with them touching the butt when shouldering a rifle/shotgun. Speaker quality is ok. However, they do sometimes suffer from mobile phone interference and the little fluffy microphone covers don't stop the wind from whistling in your ears. Also, if you're talking to someone and a gun is discharged the speaker volume doesn't turn on again for around 1/3rd of a second so I sometimes find myself having to ask people to repeat what they just said.

Pretty much what you'd expect for a budget set of electronic ear defenders really! When on the firing point I just use them as passive defenders and only use the electronics if I'm stood off of the point talking to people, so for what I want they do the job well enough.

Cheers

Ash

My dad and i bought two sets of peltor sport-tacs for £102 the pair from cabelas 3 or 4 years ago. I would never go back to anything else (normal muffs, plugs .etc) In the 3/4 years i've had them mine/my dads have not had a set of new batteries; bearing in mind i have them on full volume all the time and work at a shooting ground through the summer, excellent compared to some which require a new set of batteries everytime you go out.

I recently bought the MSA Sordin supreme basic ear defenders off eBay. Despite them being a basic analogue model they were still quite expensive at £80 but I had some cash and thought I would treat myself.

My only criticism is that they are not quite enough protection. I have a very slight tinnitus from playing with blank firers as a kid so I don’t really want it to get any worse, so I bought the gel kit for it and packed the ear piece with extra foam to cut out more noise.

Since then they have been great, particular when hunting at night when whispers between shooters is necessary.

I have Peltor Tactical Sport. I don't have a Howitzer, but they work well with a shotgun.

Turning the volume up allows you to hear things you would normally miss, and if you don't like the sounds of the countryside it has a socket you can plug your phone or MP3 into. They're a nice shade of green, shallow, and fold up small.

Mine came from Optics Warehouse when I bought my bins and bipod. They were the cheapest I could find on the net.
