yankeedoodlepigeon
Hi all. I just thought I would clean the HMR Sak Mod. I took the 3 grub screws out and read a old post that you hold the outer and push the threaded end. I even tried banging it on a solid carpet floor and its still not moving. any tips would help a lot. Thanks Lea

Try screwing it on to the barrel, and rotating the outer sleeve. If that doesn't work take it off again and soak it in WD40 or something similar overnight, and try again. yankeedoodlepigeon
Hi tried that one still didn't come off. I think I read that the sleeve comes out over the mod as in i could take it off while still on the gun? is that right? I heard that soaking it in coke might do the trick? Anyone tried that? ColinF
Yes, the sleeve will come off while the middle part is attached to the barrel.
wy111
Not conversant with the Sak mod, but got Asa on mine. Could, if needed, completely take all the mod off except the barrel/thread attachment, if that makes sense? Then easy to WD40 on threads and soak in. Next time, clean barrel threads out with old tooth/copper brush and add the slightest dab of copperslip gease. If you can, get the correct "die" and run it down the thread of the barrel, it's surprising how much "STUFF", it gets out If it's really solid, take out of stock, put action lugs in protected vice jaws and use towel and adjustable pliers to get it moving. Billy.
Elbow grease. I've had to use a set of clamps and some extra leverage to get a mod off before. If the sleeve's off, slip a piece of wood through a baffle section and use it as leverage. Oh and don't forget: Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty
bennyblanco
Don't try to hit it out I have a very dead mod sitting in my tool box. Soak it, then screw it on the gun and keep trying to tighten it and the outer sleeve should start to move. Diesel might be worth using as a solvent as long as its all removed before the mod a used. SilentKill
Had the same on my sirrocco mod and its only had about 75 rounds through it! and been cleaned 3 times in between! powder build up and pressure from the little round. dropped mine into a plastic tub with hot water and a little fair liquid! Not sure how to prevent it

activeviii
plusgas, diesel wd40. stand gun up on mod and keep adding the plusgas, do this over night. two flats on the end of the mod, put a couple of layers of cloth on the jaws of a vice and then nip up the flats on the mod, into the vice. take it steady and turn the mod sleeve and barrle anit-clockwise. it should unscrew. once it does come off and you have cleaned what you need to get your self a little tube of copper grease and put some on the tread before putting mod back on. once i come home i give the mod a slight unscrew just so it doesn't seize up. again yes i have done it as well. hehe

I might be wrong but don't the ones with grub screws not have the flats?
CharlieT
I might be wrong but don't the ones with grub screws not have the flats? No, well at least mine does not. Can't get mine apart so every so often I just wash it out with boiling water and hope for the best.

pat g
Hmm, this is interesting as i have the same problem with the SAK mod on my 22lr Finfire and was gonna stick a post on here about the very same problem. The moderator came supplied with the rifle when i bought it so i have no idea when the last time it was cleaned. Its exactly the same with 3 grub screws holding the baffels in place, but will it hell come apart . From what i understand this type is the SAK Mk1 whereas the one on my HMR is the MK2 without the grub screws and that comes apart no problems. Anything in particular that anyone would recommend to clean a moderator by the way? I just normally use hot water with detergent, but any tips appreciated. Thanks in advance . I have toyed with that idea. Like you say for £30-£35 for a new SAK its hardly going to break the bank. I'll try and get the thing apart first though. Cheers! . Colster
Welder's Anti Spatter Spray (they sell it in Halfords) - once you've got it off. It will stop the crud building up.
activeviii
I might be wrong but don't the ones with grub screws not have the flats? that will teach me not reading all the post. the mod is the older SAK, mine are the newer ones. anti splatter spray, washing up liquid and water.hehe. kent
I have a realy old and totally seized up parker hale on my .22rf, many comment on how quiet it is (the crud helps) the baffles are all burned and twisted also but i can still get super groups from the rig with it on though. i cannot realy say i am a subsciber to a clean rimfire moderator as a result, though it is esential you can remove the easily and a blip of anti seize grease works wonders on the barrel thread. For desolving carbon and powder from semi autos etc i use mineralised meths, leave overnight and they soften allowing crud to be removed easy i always pour it back in the bottle as you can use it time and again
