Welcome Scottk

I would suggest you use the Airifle for pigeons that come in to roost in sitty trees etc.

They are hard to get to land in decoy patterns, and if they do they dont hang around long.

If you have land then what about getting a shotty for the flying variety,

that way you at least have more options to improve your sport .

good luck and good shooting.

Cheers for the advice, nice to know its not just me! When you reed the mags they tell you not a problem, they will sit in a pattern no probs!!!

Had one land so far, loads take a looksi, shotgun = dead pigeon, Air rifle = frustrated shooter!!! No permission for shot gun on this land, quiet or not at all.

nice to know its not just me though!!! I have had the same problems with Crows!!

A dead rabbit with its guts out will keep crows down long enough for a shot,

but they are crafty and bloody smart, you need to be very well concealed and STILL to be in with a chance with an airifle, or any other gun for that matter,

Maggies are the same.

There are some good threads on tempting corvids/Rats etc if you do a search.?

Have you had any luck with Rabbits etc or is it just pigeon and the like your having probs with?.

Have you spoke to the land owner about using a shotty??

Cheers Sutty

Have you tried making a scrape in the ground and laying a couple of eggs in it? I used this method for 40 years when getting rid of crows. In them days didn,t shoot them just put a bit of lard mixed with alpha chlolerosis in the eggs and picked them up the next morning.

What i found will make a good PREMANENT hide it a stick made frame and every now and then get fresh branches from Conifer tree normally LOADS at the local dump and cost nothing  Take a small roll of copper wire to wire the new green conifer onto the frame and it works a treat. Even when they die off they still make a good break up hide and takes VERY little to maintain.

It also means less gear to lug about BUT the down side is if the pigeons move elsewhere your stuck :D

The makeshift Net and pole hides are good too less than £50 if you shop about can get you the poles AND net and cheaper if second hand.

The BEST hide i saw was a Dug out covered with camo netting but i would HATE to have to make a dug out everytime the pigeons moved :)

I also found birds (even the bright ones) can't count well  Three of us INC WIVES would go into the hide and the wives would go back to the cars and go home till we phoned em.

Birds see us go in and the wives go out and think "Ah there they go lets go get some grub now they sodded off :D "

As for Air rifle shooting for pigeons i think Henry hit the nail on the head. Go for the Roosted and tree bound birds as they feel safer in the tree and will sit longer.

Welcome to the Forum and hope you get some good sport in the weeks to come

Me? Yes i have :)

Worst shots to take are straight up as you have to guage the distance between the barrel and centre of scope and KEEP that distance when taking the shot and it can be hard to guage for a newbie.

Also when aiming up into branches at angles like 30 through to 65 degrees make sure you hold over a little as gravity works in weird ways

Make sure you have a clear shot too as branches cause deflections

Welcome aboard !

getting pigeons to land in decoys is not easy, getting them to stand still long enough for a shot is nigh on impossible. getting them to land near lofted decoys is easier. It is worth picking a spot to decoy that has perching trees within range as I find that alot of pigeons wont land in the decoys but will land in a nearby tree for a look.

Another good bit of advice is not to take too much stock in what you read in airgun mags, the safety stuff is always worth taking on board, the hunting articles are not very realistic. 15/20 years ago they were proper hunting, shooting mags.

Now they are very watered down and in my opinion hinged around political correctness and telling people how things are done in an ideal world and not how they really are.

When my dad took me to buy my first air rifle (about 1985) John Rothery himself

told my dad to buy me playboy and not airgun mags, these he said were no better than comics. And that was when the mags were pretty realistic !

I wish you the best of luck, especially with your crows. They are just about the craftiest ******* and unless you are well conceiled and stock still they will see you and avoid you like the plague. I find them difficult even now I've got a shotty.

Try a couple of crow decoys with your bait they can work well.

Regards

Leeboy
