Cannon shooting?

Does anyone on here shoot BP cannon? I quite like the idea of target shooting with a cannon....

I cannot justify spending money on a 'real cannon' but a reproduction minature would be ok. The only ones I've seen so far are by Ardesa (from Kranks) - what are they like? Also are are any others available in the UK?

Cheers Tiff

A couple of mates fire a cannon every Sunday at 12 and extra, on special occasions, from a pub garden

One on them started making his own brass miniatures on a lathe. I got one on my window sill :P He eventually got a bronze one cast from sectional wooden plugs he made and turned the castings down. It finished up about 3' long with a bore of(Guessing here) an 1 1/2". The other one, got an artillery carriage made and this is left in the pub garage, with the barrel transported from home on firing days.

It is held on an SGC and they get their powder from Henry Kranks.

The last times the Endeavour sailed up and moored up offshore here, they saluted each other, was brilliant :good:

Whether legal or not, I'm not sure, but they do have fun after Xmas, shooting at those shake up snow storms, with a Santa in

worcester norton shooting club has cannon comps. Members shoot 20 mm ,18mm ,down to 0.22 .additionally there is one member with a 5.5" and other sizes . the club also caters for short barrel cannon ie Golf ball mortars. FYI cannon need to go on a FAC ,which is quite straight forward. Using black powder requires having the appropraite paperwork to own, purchase and transport. A club member has recently had cast several bloomfield barrels in gunmetal and bored out to 18mm which are available ,together with 12" dia cast aluminium artillary wheels. jeff Tanner makes good moulds and can supply the right patches etc. With practice one will find that at 25m the cannon are remarkably accurate with good grouping. I hope the above is useful. If any one is interested some pictures can be posted.

Interesting you tube clip. To assist any one who is intetested in cannon shooting, below are a few points which may be of assistance.

A FAC is needed, which essentailly means you need to be in a club that holds COMPETITIONS as that is a justifiable reason to own acannon. The club must have a suitable range I would suggest that 25/50 m is adequate [some may disagree], the club must be insured for either the approraite caiber /muzzle energy ~ to establish if the cannon required is acceptable look at Dursleyrpc.og website /downloads/cannon/muzzle energy [Kier hague has done a good job in sorting it out] this table is useful in discusions with the Fire arms officer when discussing good reasons etc. It is important to understand this table as some ranges have a restriction of 0.75" bore and others have a muzzle energy ie a 20 mm cannon is acceptable[ME levels] on one range yet not accptable at wedgnock as its limited I belive to 0.75" [check the differenece between mm/and imperial on this one !!.]

one can use other 'powders' besides black powder, which makes it easier to get started ,howver they dont generate as much smoke or coughing !

If your going to make your own cannon use common sense and do the calculations etc & get it proofed ~dont use a bit of old pipe or an old signal cannon as it may be made of the 'wrong sort' of Cast Iron which to put it simply is just foolhardy !

Take a look at National cannon Association of Great Britain.

http://www.ncagb.com/

I know that a number of people having started shooting the repro Ardesa cannons at Bisley. all on a firearms license.

If you are near michaelham Priory Sussex on 9th/10th July, there are usually at least one and sometimes several medium size cannon. Great fun. also of course a chance to try muzzleloaders. Mention Pigeon watch to them on the 9th july and my name and you might get a free shot. :shoot:
