vampire
Ok so some of you may know that i recently bought a cz .223 and am now looking to get it cut and a mod to go on it. Have asked on here and other places for advice, armed with my newly aquired knowledge i have today rang some rfd/gunsmiths,this is how it went. 1,yep £40 and you dont need it proofed and a unamed mod £190 2,£45 + vat we dont do proofing 3,£80 inc proofing and reflex mod £209 4,£245 for cut and t8 mod so you will be getting cut free and you dont need it proofed as has just been proved in court 5,£135 inc vat for cut and proofing for insurance purposes. Have decided i dont need a moderator for how many fox/muntjac i will shoot and if i do ever get one it will be £50 mod and £40 cut.

garyb
Get it cut - no need for proof, and buy whatever mod takes your fancy.
Billy.
Get it cut - no need for proof, and buy whatever mod takes your fancy. Some places won't let you walk out the door without having it run through the proof house though. For an extra £ and to protect their backsides. That gunshop in Barnet will cut without a reproof. steve_b_wales
The rifle, when cut and threaded, only has to be proofed, if you intend to sell it on. I have bought many second hand rifles that have been cut and threaded, but have no proof makrs on them. Steve.
malkiserow
I was quoted £140 for fitting a mod to a rifle - this meant drilling out a DELRIN bush on the overbarrel part - the threading was already done  Now is he just trying to rip me off or is he genuinely deluded? Jackson Rifles (who sell many mods to the UK gun trade) state no new moderator from them needs proofing.

I was always on the "You need to re-proof" bandwagon, but I've jumped sides.

Scully
Just had mine chopped last week, cost £35,no proof. If you want to sell it all you do is have the threads cut off which brings it back into proof. It is only an offence to 'sell' a gun with no proof, you could always write it on the buyers ticket as 'given'. malkiserow
Weren't they sold on to you? I always understood that if you thread you MUST reproof if you sell. If the offence is to weaken the barrel, and if it already has a thread, you shorten it and add the same thread, where is the weakening? Dekers
There is still some level of debate on the cut and proof side of things, there is also what any individual RFD will actually do. Fact is about 2.5 years ago I bought a .22WMR from a RFD which had very obviously been cut and threaded ...NO PROOF at all. About 18 months ago I sold the said WMR to a different RFD as it stood, still with NO PROOF, without any problem at all! So, whats that all about then? That is my point, he bought, so someone sold on without any proof!? You can't go backwards and say it had a proof, they ALL had a proof originally!
