johnny
Does anyone know how to make a speed controller for a magnet or where I can get one from for less than 25 quid ? cheers john
red_stag88
Easy! Get a dimmer swich and run the battery through that to the magnet's motor! Or you can go to an electrical wholesailers and buy a variable resistor and do the same.

ernyha
A cheap alternative is get a dashboard illumination switch from a scrapyard. The switch that increases or dims your instrument lights in your car.
neil
or you can use a 12volt variable speed battery drill trigger

Hammergun
A potentiometer is a device which when placed in a circuit can adjust the potential (voltage) across a device (such as a wiper motor) by varying the resistance. If you get a potentiometer, make sure it can handle the max current drawn by a wiper motor with heavy load. (anyone any idea how much a wiper motor draws?) I'm surprised Deako hasnt been plugging the one on www.############## yet
sean johnston
Hello buzzer.A potentiometer is a variable resistor and if you are using one to reduce the speed of a windscreen wiper type rotor you will need a heavy duty one to do the job. highdowns hunter
HG you should be able to work out the current of a wiper motor by using Ohms Law I (Current) = Voltage divided by resistance (ohms) Dont know if that helps its about 33 years since i did any sums like that
sean johnston
Mine draws 2 amps and 24 watts of power and like i said in my last post you will need a heavy duty potentiometer to handle this.
Deako
Hammergun, Try this number from the Sporting Gun: 01277 899591 The speed controllers are £5 cheaper than ############## p.s. They also sell 6mm spring steel for the rotor arms...
sean johnston
I have dealt with the chap you are refering deako and recently just out of curiosity contacted him for the price of his spring steel which is £7.50 per 6 ft length and £15.00 for delivery,he is taking the **** with them prices. Tyke
Finding a highly enough rated potentiometer is the problem so Ive searched and found an electrical circuit that may fit the bill and come in at around £10. If I can find the time I will build one up and pass on the information.
Hammergun
I got some 3/16" spring steel from a spring makers. £5 for 16ft plus loads of offcuts to make wing spreaders and floaters from.

Hammergun
It was a "cash sale" over the counter and they wouldn't be able to send it to you. Have a look in the Yellow Pages under "spring makers".
