I hear on the grape vine (PW Chat Room) that the guy's that know camera's (Doc; & Greengrass)to name a couple, may if I ask nicely (PLZ)put me right! I'm after a camera that's, Brand new, Simplicity, very reliable, ( a bundle? deal maybe) Auto/manual would be ideal, something that I can point and click for superb near or long shots. Pricing is a factor but it doesn't scare me if it's the one for me. I have been told of these few to consider,,,Cannon 7D with Cannon L100/400 zoom (PW Member),,,Cannon G12,,,fujifilm Finepix HS20,,,Or a Cannon D90 with seperate zoom (which I've been told is far to advanced for my needs?) So I'me totally confused and need some expert advice from those in the ,,,Know. I would appreciate anybody's comments.

I have the Finepics S10 - does most things manual but also fully auto is you want equivalent of 700mm telephoto and macro down to 100mm - got some good shots with it too. IIRC less than 200

I'll check it out, thanks for your help mate :good: ..............But is that the, "best" buy for me! do you think??? I don't know

If you are not a camera buff it is a good starting place - I ditched the SLR for it and have not been sorry - smaller, lighter, versatile without phaffing and you can learn the other techniques using it when you have time but point and shoot is available - read the spec.

You have to decide what you want to do with it, if you want point and shoot compaq is the way to go if you want to get into photography and have the versatility of different lenses then something like the canon 7d and a zoom is the way forward though the combination you have listed of 7D and 100 - 400 zoom will set you back over £2500

a 350D will give you a good entry SLR camera with the option of lenses and with a manual function it will give you good quality pics for a few hundred quid

The most important question is what do you want to take pics of and what is your budget, if you answer those questions i might be able to give you a bit more advice

My wife and I, use our Narrow boat as much as ***, infact I would live on it (but my wife wont eat the mashrooms I cook for her (she wouldn't live on one) Joking apart, I espy many, many objects and wildlife on the inland waterways (like a Hare in a field at some distance, say)and I would just love to unlock a case thro up the camera, click the button, and end up with amazing shots just like you guys take!!! I'm not a photographer and I'm not a techn; guy, and I'm really talking a few hundred rather than a few thousand, but this doesn't stop me being confused on what to buy, I hope you can see where I'm trying to go,,,and thanks for your help

fuji finepix hs10, 8gig card, for me , when at max zoom its a bit tricky to keep still and in video mode can be a bit jerky in zooming in and out but fantastic, take a look at the fuji site, use search box type hs10 or what ever model your are interested in. My link

It realy boils down to what kind of photography you want to do... yes all cameras will cover most things but !!!

do you want to take landscapes, portraits, video, macro,

will you be taking the camera out with you on your shooting days ? smaller may be better

I have a Fuji S3 pro for portraites and landscapes... not much good for fast moving objects(racing cars)

I also have a Fuji S7000 (Bridge camera) for general snaps (you can't change the lens , but you still have zoom)

and a pentax W90 for everyday shots and video and used on the kayak (waterproof)

I do like the fuji range, but Cannon, nikon, pentax, are all good camera's

To try and compare a "Cannon 7D with Cannon L100/400 zoom" against a compact camera is not really possible. The 7D is a Prosumer body and the lens is a full out Professional lens. No compact camera is going to have a chance in hell in matching that combination in terms of image quality, versatility and durability.

My recommendation FWIW would be 7D/100-400mm L but there again I am in to my photography in a big way (some of my pictures http://spanielman.smugmug.com/) and even with that equipment it is not just a matter of putting the camera to the eye and "snap" a brilliant photo.

I've got a 7D with a several different lenses ranging from Canon L series through Sigma and Tamron lenses and they all come in a wide ranges of prices.

The 7D is a great camera with a 1.6 crop sensor which basically gives you a greater focal length then the lens actually is so your 100/400 is actually a 160/640. Not so good for close up stuff but very good a long range.

One of my Tamron lenses is a 18/270 so an exceptional all round walk about and the optics are comparable to the Canon L lens.

How much were you looking to send overall is the question as i'm looking to upgrade my camera which I only purchased in November last year.

Hope this helps
