Bass/mackarel lures

Later in the year we are staying in a cottage by the beach in N Wales . I was going to belt out a baited rig with the beachcaster and also have a dabble with spinners . I do not want to use my Rapala Husky Jerks if I could help it as they are £8 a pop . Anyone recommend a good long casting low cost lure that might bag a mac or a bass ? I have a couple of Bass Bullets but never used them and some big Tobies but anything better ? Thanks :good:

For mackerel and school bass you won't beat a string of mackerel feathers (silver only, not the coloured ones), especially on a beachcaster.

I have used bass bullets with good results, but always over rough ground or near structures (which means there is always the risk of losing them).

The Rapala Husky Jerk lures I have used in the US were the "suspended" type, so it was almost impossible to get them hung up, but I do know there is quite a variety in the range.

Try a Dexter wedge with a bit of red wool tied on the treble. Available in 20 - 80g. They are the nuts. Lots of cheap imitations but the hooks are whack. I use the cheapies over snags though. They'll catch most things. The old man uses nothing but 28g silver Tobys and he does alright.

Small redgills on a 4ft trace below a running bullet lead are wicked but they sink very quick so get winding as soon as they touch down if you're over snags.

Tight lines!

Mackerel lures/ feathers can be made easy my father has always used them,4or 6 hooks work well off the beach caster and off the boat,I wonder if on the Internet their might be some instructions ,we have always sat down together and done the branches with the hook and feather and then threaded them on the lead ,sounds easy I know but when you've got the hang of it ,

Saved us a fortune over the years,we always dangle lures off the boat when moving about amazing what you catch ,but also what gear you can loose

Many moons ago I was shown an excellent rig for catching bass from the shore over snags, incorporating a very similar string of lures.

The main item is a sorbo ball (heavy rubber, but floats), the ball is the casting weight.

Firstly drill through the centre of the ball and then push a stiff piece of thin plastic tube through, cutting it flush with the edge of the ball.

A 12 inch piece of heavy mono through the ball, with a bead and a swivel at each end.

One end to the reel line and on the business end tie a 5-6ft trace with a 1-2oz lead on the end.

Above the lead is where you have your small red gills (I usually tied on 6).

You can vary the business end by just having a trace with a single heavier lure.

I have used this successfully over rocks at Samphire Ho, The Warren at Folkestone and even caught pollack from the rocks at Clew Bay Co Mayo in Ireland.

when I had my tackle shop I used to sell thousands of lures called " Mackrel Man "

these were made from 8mm chromed round bar with a weight of 28gm cut at an angle iether end with swivel and size 4 treble on the end.very effective with a nice spinning or light bass rod.do not know if any of your local tackle shops will sell these but worth a look

Sound just like a Dexter wedge. Cracking bit of metal, you can ping them miles. My 2 and three quarter test carp rod can put a 65g one 100 yards with no wind.

Edit - Just seen the 8mm bit, not a dexter wedge. doh!

That sounds like a belter. Beats messing about with bubble floats.

Ive always liked the Abu Tormentor (not the metal one though, they are ****) over the snaggy ground, the hooks are pretty soft so with a decent braid and sustained pressure you can pull them straight and get the lure back. Poppers are great fun off the rocks as well. Using Floating plugs and decent polaroids means that you can normally avoid the closer in snags anyway.

Ive just spent a weekend plugging for bass down in cornwall and blanked though so dont take too much notice :lol:

Dexter Wedge, Koster, Toby ( bit flighty when casting if it's windy,) or Lucas are all good. If fishing over really rough ground use home made specials - old knife/fork/spoon handles, drill each end, add a split ring each end, a swivel one end, a treble the other & Bob's your Mothers Brother. If you like you can add bends/twists to the lure or spray paint one side over some fine gauze/mesh to give a scales effect, blue green or red tends to work best, good luck.

as you said, rapalas are great but pricey, alternative to raps are conrad lures, about £4- £5 shop around. just google conrad lures and you should find them. a touch heavier than the rap but just as good. :good:

just googled it and found fly fishing tackle co uk and 12cm conrads are £3.75 :good:

If you're ever down in he south west drop into Trago Mills. They've got jointed plugs of approx 200mm for £1.99. They aint no Rapalas but they aint far off and if you loose them its no biggy. Great action, bit on the light side for casting with a multiplier but good for trolling

  • 1 month later...

Got some Dexter wedges , Tobys and Krill type lures on the way plus I am rigging up some Pike flies I have spare as a string of feathers . Also might sacrifice my treasured Husky Jerks . Question is ; what stage of the tide is best in North Wales ?
