apache
Get an O Tom tick remover. Don't do like the video! Search there has been a recent thread on ticks
Colster
As a quick tip in lieu of a remover, big blob of vaseline (cover the tick in it) or a poke with a lighted cigarette.
TaxiDriver
Frontline, few drops and they'll fall off dead. I have used a 'Tick Remover' from the vets before, just like a little plastic stick with an end that resembles a claw hammer or nail pry-bar. Best done wearing gloves as I believe ticks carry a disease that can be bad/fatal to humans ()(anyone know if thats right/what the disease is? vulpicide
Lymes disease check out bada.org website you can buy them from the site do not under any circumstances use a lit fag use the correct tool and you will get it off without the tick regurgitating its stomache contents into the host (yir dug)
Robin128
"Several types of tick are present in the UK but not all of them are associated with disease transmission. One that is, however, is Ixodes ricinus - the sheep or deer tick - which has been identified in the spread of Borrelia burgdorferi the agent that causes Lyme disease." http://www.basc.org.uk/en/how-to/gundogs/a-time-bomb-thats-ticking--dealing-with-ticks.cfm Edited July 19, 2011 by Robin128
mpk
Ticks actually breathe on there back so a blob of Vaseline on the back will eventually (12hours) suffocate it and it will drop off with all it's parts.

Beardo
BADA do not recommend using vaseline or nail varnish etc. as this causes the tick to vomit increasing the chance of infection... use an O'Tom http://www.bada-uk.org/products/tickremover.php

vulpicide
The other thing is that Bada is a charity doing a great job in raising awareness of tickborne disease I've just been told that I'm Lyme free as the doctors thought that might have been the reason for my serious heart problems the patron is Ray Mears all the major fieldsports outfits support at Scone this year they were on the SGA stand but have in the past shared a stand with SACS a really good cause to support. They carry Lime Disease but a tick that has fed will not bite again this year. Removing them is no risk. It also takes the tick to be attached 3 days for Lyme Disease to be spread - fresh tick Vaseline should be fine.
Beardo
the problem with any kind of oil covering is that it encourages them to regurgitate whilst still attached thus making it far more likely that infection occurs
Colster
I'm not disputing that a tick remover is the right tool for the job but as the OP clearly doesn't have one, I was suggesting a quick solution that he could do right away in this instance. ziplex
I've since bought another tick tool but last time the springer had a tick and the tool couldn't be found I smeared on a little magnesium sulphate (drawing ointment) and it worked like a charm....tick was dead as a dead thing the following morning
amateur
Our dog had a tick near her eye, and I was about to use the tweezer/vaseline method, when I found this on the web http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-remove-a-tick/ I used this method, which basically involves rubbing the tick vigorously in a circular motion until it releases its grip and drops off the dog. I only needed the tweezers to pick up and squash the tick. Try it - it works!
