digger,

Don't be cross with me old chap. I just thought it odd to ask such a serious question on a pigeon shooting forum. Better to take the advice of real life close friends and colleagues than a bunch of people you've never met. And I NEVER assume anything mate. :good::good::good:

>but, he is not in the forces. he has a choice. the soldiers dont.

I don't see how they don't have a choice?!

Soldiers choose to do the job they do don't they? they sign up to protect our country, normally in a war zone??

If I was single with no family then yes I would consider it. Now I am married with a 6 year old girl no I wouldn't do it.

If I were to go then my biggest fear would be having bits blown off and coming back to spend the rest of my life as a cripple. Once you are dead you don't know about it.

This sort of thing makes you appreciate what the lads and lasses are going through every day out there. Good luck to them one and all.

if you have any life insurance policies, you might wanna check the small print.

If your considering the move, then consider this statement.

The question is, what sort of gambler are you?

I have lost £'s on many ventures and made piles on others but then again my life was never on the line.

The astute investor only puts up what he can afford to lose without his life being wrecked.

LB

Wise words LB, i'd never have figured you for a wise old chinaman.

As for me, nope not a chance, not in a million years. As all the proverbs say such as LB's, I couldnt face any of the possible bad outcomes of going. Yes the money might be good, very very good, but what a gamble.

I have two wonderful daughters and a wonderful wife, it would not only put me in geopardy but them as well.

Its your decision at the end of the day, if you can live with any of the possible outcomes, your a braver man than me. The value of our lives is the sum total of the actions we take within it, i'm going for many small numbers not one large one. Good luck!

Digger,

I was offered a job out there not long after I left the army. They were waving under my nose a salary of 5 times what I earn now, tax free, on a month on month off basis.

Like you, I have kids. I thought about it for about 15 seconds and then said thanks but no thanks.

Nothing is worth your kids growing up without their dad (IMHO)

I worked in Libya for a couple of years, against the advice of the Home Office, and it was one of the safest places I have ever been to - even the women said they felt safer than at home - so don't always beleive the hype or what 'experts' say.

BUT a war zone is a completly diferent kettle of fish altogether :good: I wouldn't do it, there must be other places to go and get a bit of tax free dosh if that is what you are after...

From my point of view as a serving soldier who has been across there...

A. i am married i have no kids. i do the job i do because i have done it for nine years and i enjoy it and being away on tour is part of the job that is my choice and believe me we get no where near the kind of money guy who work for civilian agencies get.. but i like who i work with and my job as i said before i hve done over nine years in the infantry and now i am armoured and would not change it for the world..

B. i could have got out in 03 after being there and gone to work with a civvi company as many of my freinds have done but i aint into that and i dont feel you have the same protection doing that stuff.

Also if i had Kids i would deffinatley not venture over there as a civvy for any sort of money.. and if i had kids i would probably also leave the army as i have seen how much other fathers miss them growing up..

luckilly i have an understanding wife who does not wish to have kids for now

Dont do it mate
