rtaylor
I've just got a wax jacket. However the colour is black and I was expecting a brown one. No I don't mind the black and it's quite greeny. But would it be possible to melt some brown boot polish with the melted wax and apply this? Would it stick and make it more brown? Or would it not take and get on everything it touches? I'm thinking it might just be best to try it out under the cape bit, so you can't see if it doesn't work. allthegearandnoidea
Can you not just send it back and ask for a brown one?
rtaylor
ebay job so not really. I don't mind the colour but I was wondering how boot polish would work on a wax jacket. Or if there was anything else to change the colour.
dave1419
Boot polish on your jacket will not work,it will leave marks all over your or your mates car seats,i would put up with the colour for the time being and after a few trips out with it the shine and colour will fade.is it a genuine barbour jacket,or just a copy.if its a barbour contact the factory in south shields, they might be able to help you as they have a department for repairing and reproofing their jackets---Dave
Harnser
Why did buy buy a wax jacket ? ,they are old hat nowadays . There are much better materials out there than waxed cotton jackets . I dont know any body who wears one now a days . Harnser .
dave1419
 Specially in the very cold weather when they freeze up and you find it difficult to move, more so when you need the toilet quickly!!!!!
fortune
put it back on flea bay and get rid. They just end up stinking like rancid cheese. They aren't even weatherproof as they're supposed to be unless you keep rewaxing the damn thing. And they get hooked up on barbed wire and tear which really helps the weather proof qualities. Ps Barbour charge a lot for refurb. there must be someone out there that would love to be the proud owner. I'm suprised Barbour still maake them, I've not seen anyone wearing one for years. But to answer the question, no it won't work. Best bet is to chuck the coat and buy a proper one with a Gortex membrane.

Dekers
I think you guys are going off on one a bit, there are most certainly potentially mores efficient fabrics in various ways but a half decent Wax Jacket is warm, windproof and rainproof. On top of which there are most certainly situations where etiquette and tradition mean they win hands down..... The conditions on the shoot/beating were pretty extreme as you can see but the majority of beaters wore wax and were fine! Edit Yes, I was there in my Wax and took the photo! CharlieT
Dekers There's me thinking The Royal County was affluent and modern and not stuck in the last ice age. Even down here wax jackets dissapeared with the likes of Habitat and the fondue !!!
Beretta28g
The only wax I wear is stud on waxed leggings, Last year i wore a Jack Pyke coat and will this year for beating, with my Deerhunter for posh days. For wet and cold fishing days you cant beat a flotation suit, loverly and warm.
Sprags
I have had wax jackets, moved on to Deerhunter jackets and now settle for Laksen. I have Laksen Buffalo trousers and jacket, should have bought em' years ago! EDITED TO ADD: It also comes down to budget. I don't know the OP's financial situation and don't want to, but if he can stretch it, there are better jackets out there. rtaylor
Haha you guys are geniuses. Wax jackets certainly have there uses. They don't come any tougher for beating or picking up. Especially the full length ones and a pair of wax stud on legging. I'll grant you my Musto £325 gore-tex jacket is more waterproof, but I don't really fancy ripping that one. And as for your deer hunter jackets, I'd rather wear a sieve on a rainy day. Oh and it's a Driza bone so far superior to Barbour, who are just some overpriced fashion clothing brand. Thanks to Dave for actually answering the question. Spot the Beater...how many can you see, same time as previous pic! Edit The snows came as we went out, it was clear and dry as we arrived (we had to dig the motors out to get home, BUT, such is the efficiency of the Estate the Snow Ploughs had already been out and cleared the roads through the estate so we could get out!). I have to say waving white flags as the day progressed did seem a major waste of time! Edited September 16, 2011 by Dekers
Gully
Some of these comments make me laugh. I supply stuff to Barbour and pretty much all of the wax manufacturers in this country (and no-one else really makes wax) They are making and selling more at the moment than ever before. You may not believe it but its very fashionable at the moment all over the world. Agreed there are better jackets for a cold winters night, but wax has its place. I'm wearing a Barbour at the moment, but will go to my Harkila when it gets colder.

Dirty Harry
I got a hood for mine. Just go online and make sure you order the right one. Having said that they are held on 4 studs and they are not really strong enough. I usually wear a wax cap with mine. Harry
Gully
Funny you should say that Dirty Harry, I changed the studs on my hood so the hood is hard to remove. Happy to do yours sometime if I can find all the bits.

I used to work there and they have Barbour hoods for most wax jackets. Or they should be able to get one for you. The have mail order as well. keg
I have an old Gamefair that is 25 yrs old, also have a Musto Highland. Both are excellent in the right enviroment. The Gamefair is great in the rough stuff, doesn't rip, great round fires as it doesn't melt doesn't breather like the Musto but would not be without it. A tin of wax, pan of warm water two old rags.... soften the wax by putting tin in water, apply to coat then get somone to wear it and blast it al over with a hair dryer....
