ack-ack
Biggest con I would have thought would be a very real chance of getting shipped out to Afghanistan to get blown up by the rag heads.

Alpha Mule
Go for the Paras! It's mental fun and you get to jump out of Hercie-birds! You may not too many certificates, but the 'Cherry Beret' and 'Wings' will outstrip any bit of paper, plus you will learns things about yourself you would not believe and how much further you can push yourself than you ever thought possible. Cheers, Alan B SC (Hons) Comp Sci, MCSE + Internet Not to mention: HND (merits) TV & Radio Electonics, C&G 501/0798/7 (construction skills) The last work I did was as a dinner lady ('Mid-day assistant'). Qualifications are great, they prove to prospective employers that you have commitment and a brain and may help get you in for th einterview in the first place. Join a TA regiment that will give you something you WILL NEVER GET at night school! I was in 15 Para from age 18 to 22 and I had some of the best/most profound/scariest/ most fun times of my life. P.S. that includes those nice, very accomodating (and not too pricey) ladies in the Reiper Bahn (sp) on Exercise Crusader

JMHO Yes, I'd much prefer a para to perform my Fathers heart valve replacement and pacemaker insertion than a competent cardiovascular surgeon. chrispti
Go to your Armed Forces Careers Office or go to the Army web site, and find out what Units are local to you and what trades they can offer
Lloyd90
I read on the army website if you want to be a sparkie or whatever you need to already know the trade you want to do in the TA Regular army if you want them to teach you one. Fair enough, but which TA regiment will train him to do open heart surgery then?
libs
Biggest con I would have thought would be a very real chance of getting shipped out to Afghanistan to get blown up by the rag heads. If you don't fancy a bit of action why join any part of the armed forces? All voluntary deployment at the moment, i.e. you don't have to go even if you find yourself on the ORBAT. Give it a crack. You will get to do things and push yourself harder than you thought possible. The social side is great too

Satirical on your comment that being a para will lift you with wings above any certification available, obviously the right training for the right job and all that.... True but I bet there's a few that join for the craic to relive their days in the cadet force and then get the draft and think 'oh ****!' spanj
And its STAB, not TA :yp: I served 6 years with 2 para and nearly 5 with 4 para. The TA lads were spot on for commitment, enthusiasm and fitness. No way would I or anybody else call a TA para a stab. Bugs the **** out of me that term. Funny thing is a bullet doesnt differentiate between reg and TA.............. get a grip mate.

Funny thing is a bullet doesnt differentiate between reg and TA.............. get a grip mate. Been there done it, got the T-shirts...... 8 years reg and 3 TA. And I used to refer to myself as a STAB when working with the regs! Edit to add; Worked with some STAB RLC in Iraq, bunch of wasters, didnt want to leave camp, only stayed long enough to earn a gong then they ****** off home. The STAB REG blokes who were out with us, mainly stagged on the main gate to Shiaba air field, BUT asked on many occasions to come out on the ground with us. I do respect some of them as its hard work doing a full time civie job then your training on a night time..... I know!!! I refer to the TA as STABS as I also take the **** out of the RAF and Marines, and like they do in return. Nothing serious, just a bit of healthy rival banter.
