-Mongrel-
As per the title really. I'm starting to put my Kenwood stack together again after rearranging the room and deciding my Bose Wave isn't loud enough. I'm thinking of replacing the speakers and am wondering what I should look at? We're talking ebay here, so I'm after something maybe a little older and maybe a bit of an unsung hero so I can try and nab a decent pair of speakers for not a lot of money, thoughts please. Just asked my Dad who is a HI FI buff and used to run his own shop. he says anything by Wharfdale would be a sound investment.
HDAV
Proper wharfedales yes, but after they went bust the name got used for soem awful crud, kef, tannoy, Canton, mission all make/made decent speakers and some great used buys on larger older ones available. check the ratings on the kenwood system (how old?) John_R
Heybrook HB1, on a decent pair of stands. Wonderful speakers but make sure you don't get them with rotten woofer surrounds. I have a pair, bought them new in 1985. They still sound good but I need to either mend the surrounds or maybe replace the drivers.

Dunkield
Try and get any of the older generation 'Mission' speakers from 20 years ago (yes really!). I have a pair or original 700's that are even older than that The foam round the cones perished and collapsed after an evening of drunken revelry, but some nice chap on eBay does kits to fix that, so hopfully I will get another 25 years out of them now
working dog
Mission 774 floor standing speakers here. I bought them new about 11 years ago and they still sound great today. They replaced a small set of Rogers that werent up to the job in the new (bigger) living room when we moved. The 774's certainly can ! Cost me £500 new and theres a pair on that popular internet auction site that are currently at £
DSPUK
HDAV I had a Audiolab 8000A -- Wish I still had it all instead of this modern stuff - all seems tinny to me - but I suppose being half deaf doesn't help any. Dave Top bit of kit went onto be Tag Mclaren Audio now back as Audio lab IIRC or was. Spendor made some nice speakers there are hundreds to choose from I have old wharfedale Diamonds that are now relegated to BBQ duty with an old technics AMP, still sound great! Pushkin
You didn't say how good or how cheap what about these? http://www.petertyson.co.uk/ebuttonz/ebz_product_pages/linn_klimax_350.shtml?fshop Really good speakers - and you get a 5 year guarantee as well Pushkin B)

I adored the sound, but when the foam I just left them behind in my last house . A second vote for early generation Mission I've got some more modern mission speakers now and they just aren't the same
Ricko
I always used to hang around richer sounds, are they still going? If you are buying 2nd hand speakers, press the cone in gently, it should slide smoothly, if it grates against the magnet it has been over powered i.e. useless

Do I search for speaker surround kit? Spender S6's, new 10 years ago they were circa £1500 now around for £500 ish in good nick. Neil. I have a pair of Spendor SP2 here. They seem better for the classical music, something about the Heybrooks makes rock etc sound better.
