person22
hi there, me and my cousin were talking earlier about getting our bike licences, we are both 21 and its something we've talking about doing ever since i can remember but just never got round to doing. has anyone got one recently and could let me know what the procedures are? im guessing its a form from the post office then cbt theory and test but im not too sure, thanks
Hunter
If you are 21, its simple.. apply for DAS or otherwise known as Direct Access. To complete this, you must first take a CBT course (compulsary basic training) the CBT grants you permision to ride motorcycles up to 125cc, and taking the final DAS course gives you permision to ride any size motorcycle you wish, and being 21, insurance goes down nicley. I was about to take my A2 level course to progress to 400cc restricted, but im now selling my bikes. Good luck, get it done before summer so you can go out and ride
il cacciatore
Good choice mate! Ill inform you of the procedure to the best of my knowledge. This applies if you already hold a full drivers licence. If you dont then its slightly different. First off is to get your Compulsory Basic Training on a 125cc bike. This needs to be done through a motorcycle training center. To do this itll take about 3 - 4 hours depending on your ability. This will then get your L plates so you can get on the road to practice. It lasts for 2 years before it expires and lets you drive a capacity of 125cc and not more. Next is to sit your 125cc test which will restrict you to a 125cc or 33bhp sized bike and after 2 years after completion you will then get a unrestricted licence as a matter of course. Since your 21 then you can do what is called Direct Access which means you can then sit another test that gives you a unrestricted licence straight away and is the most direct access to the power. I would definetly do it just now because they are going to change the licencing system in a couple of years to make it even more difficult to obtain a bike licence. Its not a cheap thing to get cause if you dont have your own bike then youll need to rent it from the training company which is usually an added cost. edit- doh, need to type faster, Hunter beat me. Cranfield
I passed my test on a moped equipped with pedals (this enabled me to drive a 1000cc motorbike ). Part of the test circuit was on a steep slope and I had to stand up and pedal, to make sure I got to the top. No crash helmet, just a cap, those were the days. Lord Geordie
Ah Yes cranfield the P Pot helmets One of my first helmets when i got my first moped in 1987 My first form of transport to work. Mossy!! I sat my DAS on my birthday 2 years ago and was happy as larry to pass first time But i have had a lucky run of tests though with 1st time passes Car then i passed my PCV licence first time too and then on to the Bike and again 1st time I would definatley recomend a DAS course and in the mean time buy a cheapo 125 to tide you over till you get your pass. The 125s can be VERY nippy if you get the right ones Aprillia RS125 Cagiva Mito 125 The Mito is purported to reach near 125MPH And if you get a feel foe the 2 strokes then a RGV 250 is a pocket rocket (nicknamed widow makers ) I would recomend going to a 600cc when passed till your insurance comes down then move onto the bigger bikes. Oh and a bit of a tip Classic powerbikes get cheaper insurance I am watching a Suzuki Katana 1100 on an online auction site at the mo I am on the look out for a nice thou or over next as a move up from my old GSX600 LG

Teal
I don't know if the motorbike hazard perception is the same. I got a dvd off ebay (pirate) for a £2 which has all the official questions and also hazard perception test video clips. 3 weeks is plenty of time to get it done. It's supposed to be click the mouse when you first see a hazard and click as it "develops" if you overclick (ie randomly) you get no points. You get points (out of 6 I think? depending on your reaction speed to the hazard). I found it straightforward, but some of my mates have failed on it, the hazards are mostly cyclists, horses, cars pulling out, traffic lights or pedestrians running out/ zebra crossings.
