unapalomablanca
I read people saying that the pigeons are not on the rape right now but are in the bushes and trees eating the berries and the acorns. I get the eating the berries bit as ive seen it many times, but how the hell would a pigeon eat an acorn, surely these are for squirrels? If they did manage to get one in whole how the hell would it get digested, its a very hard object?
TJ91
They do eat them. I have shot many pigeons under oak trees. They are large but pigeons beaks open wide. Don't know how they digest them tbh. I gues something in there crops breaks them down. Record number of acorns in crop I have found is 7. Cranfield
A pigeon with a crop stuffed full of acorns looks grotesque. I have shot them hardly able to fly they were so full. It always amazes me how they can digest such a hard shelled item, beechmast is not much better.
WoodyPopper
I don't know about acorns, but I was amazed once at Victoria bus station to see a pigeon swallow a whole malteser that someone had dropped. I couldn't believe it wouldn't choke - but it waddled off in search of more.

WelshLamb
a bit off topic, but I once saw a seagull swallow a whole discarded double ice cream cone  you could see the shape of it stuck in its neck
Catweazle
I've shot them so stuffed with acorns they looked fit to explode. Not small acorns either, they seem to eat the biggest.

Most acorns ive ever found in a birds crop is 20 they were of good size ,but for lumps of sugar beet that does get me as some bits they eat are huge .
