I read people saying that the pigeons are not on the rape right now but are in the bushes and trees eating the berries and the acorns. I get the eating the berries bit as ive seen it many times, but how the hell would a pigeon eat an acorn, surely these are for squirrels? If they did manage to get one in whole how the hell would it get digested, its a very hard object?

They do eat them.

I have shot many pigeons under oak trees.

They are large but pigeons beaks open wide.

Don't know how they digest them tbh. I gues something in there crops breaks them down.

Record number of acorns in crop I have found is 7.

A pigeon with a crop stuffed full of acorns looks grotesque.

I have shot them hardly able to fly they were so full.

It always amazes me how they can digest such a hard shelled item, beechmast is not much better.

had birds come in to decoys with a crop full of acorns, why i don,t know they can,t be hungry with that lot stuffed in the crop, probably just the curious nature of them

Pigeons love acorns . Wait and see how big a piece of suger beet or potato they can swallow . They seem to gulp it down very much like a snake eating a whole pig .

Harnser .

:stupid:

Most acorns ive ever found in a birds crop is 20 they were of good size ,but for lumps of sugar beet that does get me as some bits they eat are huge .
