Mines always set at 16 degrees in the hall as well, in this old cottage with no sealed units or double glazing upstairs along with draughty windows in the bathroom and landing its been needed a few times lately in the mornings and evenings. I do have the option of an open fire in the living room which also helps heat the bedroom above to save on oil

its on 24/7/365 otherwise I'd hibernate.

When we had our boiler changed we had fancy super dooper controls fitted,

We have a radio controlled programmer/room thermostat that allows upto 8 different temperature settings throughout the day which can be varied by time and or temperature.

We've found that maintaining a core level of warmth only to have the temp set higher at times when we're in the house to have cut our gas bill by 2/3 and be more comfortable 24/7

Why have a date to go by with heating? Ours went on the other day when it went down cold over night, then I switched it off again.

When the wood burner is running we have our heating on from 5am until 8am so it's warm when we get out of bed (for the mrs). Then the burner is lit and that does the job until the next morning.

At the moment we're having our fireplace knocked out and made bigger so the heating had to go on in the evening too. I can't wait for the bigger fire to arrive, I've got a Marley garage full of seasoned wood to go at! :D

It has been shown to be more economical to maintain a base temperature and top it when required rather than hauling it up from maybe 8 or 9 degrees to the required 19 or 20. That's why mine is never off.

The room 'stat is set at 18 deg C, if it gets cold enough to bring room temperature below that the heating comes on irrespective of date, we have a night sitch back facility which automatically lowers the 'stat setting to 16 degs and then ups it again at 6 am. It is the most cost effective way I have found of running it and that's over 10 years of experimentation.

We have oil CH and 2 fires, one a log burner/anyfuel the other an open fireplace. Those, with occassional use of an electric fire and a propane 'log burner look-alike' keep our oil bill down to something a little more manageable. It will be a few weeks yet before we put it on.

When we moved here oil was 12p a litre, its 57p now. How that price is justified in 14 years is beyond me.
