unapalomablanca
I just saw a feature on Sky news about Spain and Portugal. It's absolutely catastrophic for the spanish, youth unemployment is over 50% and the property crash and national debt are ruining everything. I heard someone say that the true price of a property isn't really known as the holders of the debt (the banks) are terrified that if the prices drop even more then the shares will just crash. I hate to see this happen to a great neighbour and ally of ours who were once one of the original empire builders. Who else feels sypathetic? p.s i am fully aware that the u.k. too has big problems. FalconFN
Our problems do seem small compared to Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy. I'm still poor though, and every month seems worse than the last..cue violins.
-Mongrel-
To be honest, I'm more worried about what it will mean for my Spanish mortgage. I am in negative equity, which isn't a problem as I don't intend to sell it, but what happens if their currency crashes? It is so sad, they are in general nice people in a lovely part of the World, but they really are suffering at the moment, you see it everywhere. Zapp
My mother in law has a house in one of the expat ghettoes in southern Spain and she has lost 75 grand on the value of her house in the last 3 years.

Wharf Rat
Spain.... Great Neighbour.... ally.... did i blink and miss something? i fail to think of anything the spanish have given us in modern history. Britain backed Franco by only effectively enforcing the 1936 non-intervention treaty against the Republic during the civil war. In return, Britain got a lot of very nice side by sides at a decent price about 40 years later.
ben0850
Truly sad state of affairs. After working in Gibraltar and living in Spain for a fair few years It saddens me to think how the country is now pretty much on its knees... BUT........I am under no illusions that the Spanish government have to take most if not all of the blame, poor economic decisions, ridiculous public spending coupled with low taxes and an attitude of take take take from the EU have done them no favours. As with all countries now in the mire it's the poor countrymen and taxpayers who have to graft and pull the economy out of the ertha kitt!! That's the plan, we are affording it at the moment, and at some point it will get easier to rent...so much vacant property at the moment that it's a renters market, they are pushing the prices lower every year just to get SOME business. Spain has been more of an enemy than an ally through the years. He's on another trolling expedition and factual ignorance is his forte. 39TDS
An awful lot of cheap fresh salad and soft fruit. I don't know the exact figures but would be very surprised if it was anything less than many billions of pounds worth. I am a grower of the above so it certainly didn't do me any favours but as a nation we have had some very cheap food off them.
Kes
I find it difficult to accept Spain as 'sympatico' but you wouldnt wish their problems on anyone. T'other way round and I dont think we'd rate a thought at siesta time. They didnt build very good ships either !!!
Catweazle
Has anyone ventured out of the tourist areas and watched the Spanish being Spanish ? My wife and I wandered into a remote rural bar once and watched them dancing, I have never seen such passion since.
