Magnet Battery problems.

Having problems with batteries only lasting 1\2 hour on my magnet instead of the usual 4-5 hours. ( I use alarm type batteries). I have replaced the wiring on the magnet and bought a brand new battery , but still only getting 1\2 an hour from them.

Anyone else had such problems , if so did you manage to cure it ?

If I remember correct a rotary uses 2ah which means a 17 ah battery will last for 8-9 hours. I have also heard of knackered speed controllers drawing excessive current ......maybe this is were the issues lies ? I use a car battery (although it is a totally new thing for me)

Something should be running pretty hot to use that much current, check if anything seems over hot.

Have the batteries checked , if you fast charge them you can damage them , they need slow trickle chargeing.

Try a known good battery and see if you get the same result to eliminate a battery fault.opps just read you have done that :)

Bypass the speed controler and see how long the battery lasts , if its still the same short run time then the motor is suspect as K acked.

make sure the lead from battery to rotary is not too thin, that can burn up power like a heating element especialy if very long, Battery lead needs to be roughly capable of carrying 5 amp max, (about vacum cleaner thickness is adquate.)

it is possible with the three spade connection wiper motors to get the conections wrong if stripped down, wireing up the slow speed + and the fast speed + instead of the normal - and + can make the motor turn but burn up power,( the + and - connections are not always shown on the motors, referal to the wireing diagram from the vehicle it fits or by checking by someone with car electrical knowledge or rotary manufacturers)

A matter of elimination one by one is the only way to find out.

Just to jump on this thread!! how long is the ideal/maximum, from the battery in the hide, with a speed controller on to the rotary in the pattern!!!

Cheers

Alan

If you use a 17 AH battery as many do (or the equvalent in smaller batteries) , around 8 hours run time as an average , a long lead will make it slightly less but not much.

A few variables in calculating , some motors take less current and have a longer run time , some more current and shorter run time.

Thanks for that Deny, but my question was,

is there and ideal or maximum length of cable to be used ( from battery to magnet), ie 10/20/30 metres and what sort of amp capacity should it be??

Cheers

Alan

Personally I would keep it a little longer than the magnet arms so you don't get bonked on the head with a dead pigeon when you plug it in. Why would you want loads of wire sprawled across a field, would only be a matter of time before you trip up on it...

That's my view anyway

Well my thoughts were, that with the battery and speed controller in the hide, you could adjust speed/switch it on and off without leaving cover!!

True makes it easy to adjust but a lot more fuss to move the magnet around to suit the day and like I said roughly the wire thickness thats used on a vac min as a rough guide , 2 core if you can get it and want to run it at a long length, there is no real ideal length just what you rig your rotary to work on and does what you want it to.

Personaly I'm with Cosd on the length of wire , especialy if you use a dog or likely to which I sometimes do, great for them to trip over/tangle with and cause havoc with the electrics and maybe themselves.

this may sound stupid but have checked that your battery charger is acutally charging!

i had this a few years back thought it was the battery but it turned out the charger was faulty the charge light was on but it was not charging :good:

  • 2 weeks later...

i used to use a long wire to the rotor to enable me to turn it on or off as the crows really flare

from the magnet round here. gave up on the idea a while ago as the extra weight of a big spool of wire

and the voltage drop over the cable length made it a real pain......especially when you had to carry it

a long distance. just extra weight i didnt want. if you look around you can get a remote control with on/off

and fast/slow speed adjustment that should sort you out. :good:

I dont even have a speed control and on off switch etc. I just have about a 3m cable that goes straight from the battery to the motor. I have several different ApH batteries but have found the 7ApH ones last more than a days shooting. Try shortening the cable, clip it straight to the battery and see if that cures the problem.

None of the pigeons I have shot have commented on the speed of the magnet.

lol, same as me graham, just a piece of wire long enough to stop me getting smacked in the

head by the pigeon on the rotor. no speed control, and the on/off switch is me walking up and pulling the wire off....
