robborobbo
See link below for article on the boys tragic death http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2657792/Boy-10-killed-in-air-gun-shooting.html Didn't think you could buy fac air pistols. If so it should of been kept in a locked cabinet & not in the garage?
tweedledee
typical news papers,i would think it`s a standard air pistol, which i think runs in round 6 ft lbs, unfortunate that the youngster has ended up dead.
wymberley
Yep, 6 ft/lbs is the unlicenced max. I can't find any reference in that article to FAC. Where did that come from?

olly321
i suppose a 6lb legal air pistol would kill a child at close range, its a sad waste of a young lads life
Dekers
The article mentions higher powered air guns / rifles That is standard newspaper hype, every air gun I have ever seen an article about in the press is HIGH powered. They like emotive language. Awful tragedy just the same! ...and it was 12 Jan apparently, so this didn't exactly get banded about in the headlines!! As opposed to "toy" under 1 Joule energy.... This is exactly what the VCR act was supposed to prevent.....effective legislation again. Alanl50
The Law From February 2011, the Crime and Security Act 2010 makes it an offence for a person in possession of an air gun to fail to take “reasonable precautions” to prevent someone under the age of 18 from gaining unauthorised access to it. Tragic Not sure what will happen but lets face the Father couldnt be punished anymore. Alan
richg
I think this tragedy emphasises the importance of teaching children as early as possible that mishandled guns kill, and that they are not toys.Sadly for most kids, what they learn about guns comes from the TV and vidio games where everybody gets shot and jumps up again apparently unhurt I think every ten year old should be taken to a shooting school and given a practical demonstration of both the enjoyment of safe gun use as well as the devastation it can inflict in the wrong hands. It should be part of the school curiculem. But i can't see it happening any time soon.
Livefast123
A tragic accident and my thoughts go out the the family who must be distraught. The father has been punished enough and will be probably be haunted by the thought of 'why didn't I keep it locked up properly'. I have young kids in the house and keep my air guns in the cabinet to stop my young ones getting to them. When the time comes i'll teach them how to use them, then they go back into the cabinet. Something no parent should have to go through

JonathanL
The usual guter press load of rubish. It is NOT a 'high-powered' air weapon at all. Well, I suppose that the term is open to opinion but from a strict legal point of view a pistol not exceedng 6ft/lbs is a low-powered air gun, although it is still a firearm. If it were any higer in poswer you could not hold it on FAC but would need a section 5 authority as it would be prohibited under section 5(1)(aba) J. JonathanL
how did he manage to get shot twice did the kid reload :o Perhaps it was a repeating C02 pistol or someting? Very difficult to tell from the awful, sensationalist reporting by the worst low-life of the British media. I bet they probably hacked his parents phones too! J. kent
Incredibly tragic, let us all remember what we were like as kids and how hideing such things is not ever enough, neither is locking away on its own. They must be locked safely away of course but the kids should be educated in thier use and dangers also, to keep something secret is to make it exotic and exiting to a young mind
