Ferret Hutch

Recommended Posts

Looks nice and airy ,I do'nt like to see any thing kept in small dark cages,

I was also thinking you could put another floor in it, ferrets love to go up and down ,its good exercise and would double the floor area without taking up any more space,

you've done a good job on that and I do'nt mean this as a criticism,I'm just trying to offer help, but I was thinking with those large wire doors ,if a strong wind is blowing into them when its raining it may get a bit damp in there,

but at least they have a nice sleeping quarters that would stay dry .

as you can see from this pic I speak from experiance, notice the plastic on the door to keep out the rain :drinks:

my cage has three levels and the run on the side .

all the best Mick.

Thanks for all the replies

I am going to run a load of plastic drainpipe around the higher level to give them some fun and more space

with possibly the hammock in the middle.

Its a water based fence preserver I hope its Ok? What does everyone else seal the inside with?

Nice looking set up you have there, I was intending to keep them under a raised platform down the garden

that is quite sheltered, not totally water proof but the rain wouldn't be driven in.

I've been reading alot of the ferret related stuff thats on at the moment, & realise I might get a problem with flies getting in if I feed them rabbits & squirrels. And I wondered if i could put a hinged fly screen across the front of the doors? What do you reckon?

I,ve thought about using fly screens myself, but have never come across any suitable stuff in the right size ,but if you can get some i'd say go for it! :good:

To be quiet honest i dont realy get to many flys ,as I feed mostly a complete cat food during the summer months ,and clean out the toilet corner everyday.

If you do get some fly screens be sure to let us know ,sounds like you have a good place for the cage to go .

All the best to you ,Mick.

Nice Hutch SS. :good: Best of luck with your ferrets mate. :)

I used Ronseal Fence life, on one of my huthes, it says safe for pets, so i presume its ok, as iv coated the inside aswell, to give it extra protection from the urine ect.

It should do exactly what it says on the tin. ???

That's a really nice hutch - I wish I had the skills to produce something as well put-together as that looks. My efforts at carpentry are a little - er, 'agricultural' is probably the nicest way to describe them.

You mentioned about flyscreen - I don't know if it's any help (and apologies if you know this already) but my local builders' merchant supplies black plastic flyscreen mesh fabric. I'm a pretty new ferret-owner, but my ferrets don't seem to mind it, and I think it's reducing the number of flies who are getting in (although I probably would persuade myself of that anyway, given the amount of time it took me to put together a flyscreen :good: ).

Would you mind if I asked what the dimensions were on your hutch, please? My ferrets are only young kits at the moment, so the size of the hutch isn't of immediate concern, but I am beginning to wonder about knocking together something bigger for them in the fairly near future, as I'm starting to worry that they won't have enough space.

being some what besotted with ferrets but never having owned my own, i recently purchased a polecat hob from a friend of mine, im currently waiting for him to be ready to pick up, and have just finished building his hutch, i used a ready built sturdy hutch our sick cat (old and iunable to controll her bodily functions) used to live in, (thouroughly cleaned out of course) so its a fair size and built a large run underneath with a false burow, (a box burried in the ground with removable lid and pipe leading in, so i can place food in the box and the feeret will associate 'hopefuly' dark holes with rewards) and a couple burrlop hammocks, is there any other things i can put in that he will enjoy playing with?? also ive read ferrets like company could a jill be put in with him? if either he was castrated or she nutured? or would they be fine unles she was in season? any info would be good as im very keen and have read a great many books so feel prepeared but there is no better advice than afvice from the poeple who already keep and wrk ferrets so they know thats what!!

Well,,,,,,,, the jill needs to be taken out of season whenever she comes into it, otherwise the oeystrogen will build up and MAY kill her, the male also will try and mate with her even if she isnt in season, so as soon as it reaches late december early january you will need to separate them otherwise you will have kitties. The jill can be taken out of season using a vascetomised hob if you have one avaiable or jill jab from the vets costing about 10 quid.

My advice to you is get get them both spayed, or separate them, or castrate the boy and have to take out the jill from season everytime she comes in.

Hope this helps?

Alex
