richg
My mate and i have had our best day this spring so far, a final tally of 180 picked up. We share a hide taking it in turns to shoot, with little wind , birds came in from all directions making it testing to say the least. All in all a great day. Mightymariner
That's a good bag. This year the pigeons don't appear massively interested in the maize, even though the estate flailed them and left them for a few weeks before ploughing in - the birds haven't been there in big numbers. Perhaps there was less food left on the stems by the time they were chopped. A pal and I did manage 47 between us on two different patches of maize, but most of mine were coming into the trees behind me. They'll all be gone next week so will be interesting to see where the birds are then. Sugar beet just gone in and I reckon peas won't be long. I think it can be hit and miss, just the same as any other food source for pigeon. I do know a bloke who shot 400 on maize the other week in Bourne. richg
Visited the well again yesterday afternoon and again today. The chopped maize is still holding the birds on the estate, birds are feeding late in the day around here, yesterday i started at 1.30 and packed up at 4.30 for a bag of 33. today i started at 1.00 and finished at 4.30 for a bag of 56. So far i have had seven goes on the maize for a total of 575 birds picked up, thats an average of 82. Well Pleased. I might add, the birds are getting very decoy shy. This year, where we shoot they delayed ploughing in the maize so we could shoot it but it was still a bit disappointing in the numbers on the covers. Though we didn't get on them till about a week after cutting, so I am not sure if anyone else had a good day before us. Best day I had was 42 on some maize which had been cut for cattle food last November and the farmer had spilt no end of cobs on the ground.
