Thunderbird
I'm looking to get a new warm/waterproof/useful jacket for next season but I would rather not go down the camo route as I want it to serve a few different functions, so I'm thinking plain green. What can people recommend?

Thunderbird
I suppose my question could have been phrased please recommend a plain shooting jacket that would also be suitable for wildfowling.
Dr_evil
I think Musto do one and deerhunter also do a green jacket
silver pigeon 3
I have the Eider for out on the river as you know, but i am always been impressed with the deerhunter cloting i have bought in the past. Have a look here mate http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/deerhunter/ you can normally pick up a bargain if you keep an eye on it
Thunderbird
Cheers I'll have a look at those. It might be unrealistic to just get one jacket to do all (winter) shooting jobs but I'm going to give it a go!
sodylt1
Until it gets really cold I use an Ex-army gore-tex jacket and just add layers underneath, you can get them for around £35 so you dont need to worry about mud and the like ruining an expensive jacket. As others have said a use a Rivers West Eider for proper fowling when it gets really cold, and its the dogs wotsits!
HDAV
I have a Browning Hydro fleece Jacket plain green incredibly warm water proof has an inner belt which stops the air rushing trough and storm cuffs so rain doesnt run down your arm while shooting and is under £100! http://www.lgasupplies.com/browning-hydro-fleece-jacket---green-202-p.asp Got mine from http://www.breconretail.co.uk/browning-hydrofleece-jacket---green-892-p.asp great service. Never been cold in mine but you do notice how warm your torso is compare to legs! Edited March 15, 2012 by HDAV
ayano3
I have had one of these JACKETS for many years. Never been washed or clean, still waterproof and quite warm. Has good pockets and a poachers pocket inside. Its seen the marsh on many occasions but only just wear it now when I am picking up or on Pheasant shoots. I think the price has only gone up about £20 in about 15+ years !! Good value jacket for many occasions. The trousers and stud on leggings are good too. Dr_evil
Why not get a barbour ? stylish, waterproof and warm
Thunderbird
Deerhunter Montana with Polar Flece insert I like the look of this one, pretty versatile and not bad value. Why not get a barbour ? stylish, waterproof and warm Yeah I'm thinking about that, bit of a baffling array of them nowadays. And recommended models? Dr_evil
No idea on model really, dads got one he likes but its an older model…….non wax jacket but thick and waterproof its in a dark green and he uses that for dog walking in the rain and going out in winter so its pretty warm but might be an older model

chrispti
Had my Deerhunter jacked a few years now, worn it out on the marsh in some horrendous weather, never leaked once Saying that, my Barbour Dunmore fleece has been out in some pretty bad weather and is much warmer
Thunderbird
That Deerhunter Montana looks good actually. Hmmm. The Ram one they do looks nice as well but I don't think it's hard-core enough for fowling, more of a game shooting jacket I think.
Beretta28g
That Deerhunter Montana looks good actually. Hmmm. The Ram one they do looks nice as well but I don't think it's hard-core enough for fowling, more of a game shooting jacket I think. I have used my Ram this year on the marsh. Mine is a 4 Year old one and the only problem with it is the pockets arent sturdy enouugh to take many cartridges. Very waterproof and surprisingly warm. The only thing to watch is that the pockets are in front of the waterproom membrane, so st stuff in the pockets gets wet. If it helps you choose for fowling this year i am getting a Montana jacket and Chest High Montana Trousers. Suits me and if its green can be worn elsewhere. sitty tree
hello mate. dont know what other things you want to use it for. but if you want it for fowling i would get an old wax of ebay and wear a couple of sweaters. i do this all the time .{warm as toast lol} dont see the point getting a very expensive jacket to get it caked in c--p . im no worse for wear after 30yrs fowling . anser2
Before the days of the modern wind\water proof and breathable American style jackets I had a number of Barbour wax jackets and would not recomend them for wildfowling. They are heavy , get stiff when wet and none on mine lasted more than a year ( though I used to wear them on the reserve on every wet or cool day of the year ). They always used to wear on the cuffs. There are a lot of good camo jackets on the market today and the main difference is the price. Redhead , Rivers West or Deerhunter for about £150 will all provide all a wildfowler could want from a jacket. The other big problem with wax proof jackets is they are much too dark. I suspect thousands of wildfowl owe their lives to spotting them. I have two brand new barbours in the lobby now , they have been there for years and will probably stay there. Gutty Boots
Plain green, try a Nomad smock. Deerhunter Montana, good coats warm as toast, but as has been said, in a downpour everything in the pockets gets wet & the neopreen sleeves take an age to dry out, hardwearing though. Thunderbird
Some great info here guys. I must admit I don't like the idea of the pockets in the Montana getting soaking wet ;(
hendersons
Have a look at this one. If you order from bushwear rather than sportsman you will also have more of a chance of getting it before next season starts http://bushwear.co.uk/styles.php?ProductID=101494&ClassID=
