Cranfield
They are being caught at Hythe, but not in good numbers. The Southeast winds of the last week have made the water quite murky for the first 200 yards from the shore and that could be keeping them away. The winds are changing to Southwesterly today and staying that way for the next few days. That should improve things.

henry d
I love spinning for them, better than feathers, you just get the hitting a brick wall feeling. As for float fishing..........it`s like the lightest knock and all hell breaks loose thank the Good Lord for mackerel.
lurcherboy
It was feathers HD He went home at 20 as that was enough so fair play to him. LB

Seals and Sea Lions little boogers used to take the bait fish and give you one hell of a tug but always broke the lines. Mind you if you do land one you'll have blubber to eat all winter and a nice pair of mukluks to keep your tootsies warm when out duck huntin'
fiiish1987
I got an old 12ft beach caster thats not been used, and a reel of line. I've not been since knee high and never got anything. I've got chesil beach on my doorstep and the fish are almost throwing themselves out the water at you. AND I WANT THE BEGGARS! Any tips on how to set up the rigs for mackerel? If not i'll settle to nicking beki's speargun and i'll go after the bass off weymouth bay instead.

LB All gone a bit quiet on the Crayfish in that particular lake after we had the big oxygen crash before you were down last time. However our other lake is full to the brim with them and they usually just dig a big hole and bury them - I am sure that if you wanted some you would be more than welcome. Unfortunatly my P.C at work won't let me onto moochers - great living in a democracy with freedom of choice! Pike
MC
I have just come back from Dorset and have caught several mackerel from chesil beach. Go to a tackle shop and buy yourself some feathers or tinsel lures and some plain leads. Go to the ferrybridge car park and walk accroos the beach to the sea (a marathon in itself) and cast as far as you can and reel back in. I found a cast of about 100yds and let the feathers sink to the bottom then jig them while reeling in. A lead lift helped as well so the feathers rise up in the water as you jig. I ended up with over 50 from 2 sessions. which in turn ended up in the freezer for bait and the smoker to eat. Have fun Martin
ronttuk
my mate went to dungeness and said they were jumping on the beach they picked them up when there arms ached from casting that was 2 weeks ago
Cranfield
Its very patchy from Folkestone to Dungeness at the moment. I know people that have fished four consecutive days twice, in the last 2 weeks and not had a mackerel. The winds with east and north in them seem to slow things right down. A few settled days of west and southwest light winds could bring them back in numbers.
lurcherboy
My buddy has informed told me that after this weekend, which should whip the beach up a bit, two days of fair weather will have them back again. Follow the seagulls chaps. Pike, if they are coming out en mass, I can get up there tuesday early am, let me know mate? PM'd you my new mobile number. fiiish1987
went back to chesil yesterday. started at 12pm and got nothing. i could see the boiling water now and then but i couldnt hit it. after 2 hours of nothing decided to switch to a bottom rig but othing would bite . come 4pm got very bored, started packing up, went to the netest guy (who was also chasing the mackerel but with some success) and gave him remainder of bait. We started talking and he decided that i was using to light a weight and i needed a shockleader. He very kindly proceeded to kit me up with an old shcokleader and 5oz weights. He then went on with his lads. 1hr later i had a grand total of 20 mackerel! Now i'm looking all over the net for mackerel recipes! Just goes to show, a little first hand advice from a decent person will go a lot further than the hours i've spent on the net trying to find out the best methods.
